SUMMER DISCOVERY ENRICHMENT COORDINATOR

The Enrichment Coordinator supports the Summer Discovery program by planning and facilitating high-energy extracurricular activities that complement the academic instruction led by Teachers. This role focuses on group games, physical activities, team-building exercises, and structured recreation, ensuring youth remain engaged, active, and supported throughout the program day.

This is a Temporary Administrative Special Services (TASS) position. This Appointment Term is based on availability of grant funds.

This is a grant-funded position. The continuation of this role depends on the availability of ongoing funding.

Employment beyond the current grant period is not guaranteed and will be based on the renewal of funding.

Requirements

  • Facilitate daily enrichment blocks such as group games, sports, team challenges, and recreational activities that align with program goals
  • Create an inclusive, supportive, and safe environment for youth during all enrichment sessions
  • Manage large groups of youth and work with camp staff to maintaining positive behavior and engagement
  • Collaborate with Day Camp Director to ensure smooth transitions between enrichment activities
  • Assist with program routines including arrival, dismissal, and movement between activities
  • Adapt games and activities to meet the interests and energy levels of youth
  • Maintain equipment, supplies, and activity spaces in an organized and safe manner
  • Ensure consistent attendance, punctuality, and clear communication with site leadership
  • Participate in all mandatory training and planning sessions
  • Support overall site culture by modeling professionalism, teamwork, and youth-centered engagement

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or a related field.
  • Michigan Certified Teacher
  • One (1) year of experience in conducting organized recreational activities or in some athletic or related activity.


Equivalency

  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis.


Required Qualifications

  • Experience working with youth in recreation, after-school programs, summer camps, athletics, or related settings
  • Strong group-management and youth-engagement skills
  • Ability to independently lead structured activities for large groups
  • Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and professionalism
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with Teachers and site staff
  • Reliable transportation and ability to work at multiple locations if needed


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in coaching, recreation leadership, camp counseling, or group facilitation
  • Familiarity with youth development principles and SEL practices
  • Ability to design engaging physical activities, team-building routines, or game rotations
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills


Training

  • Training Schedule: June 22 – August 14 from 1:00pm - 5:00pm

  • Knowledge of rules and equipment for the more common group games.
  • Knowledge of purposes and goals of organized recreation work.
  • Knowledge of first aid methods.


Skills:

  • Skill in administering first aid.

  • Ability to organize, teach and lead groups in various forms of directed recreational activities.
  • Ability to display understanding of and appropriate responses to childhood behavior.
  • Ability to administer first aid.
  • Ability to interact effectively with the public and children with tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to display initiative and resourcefulness in promoting interest in recreational activities.

Employees who hold Special Service titles are only eligible for Benefits after working 1,440 hours in a fiscal year.

Special veterans' preference (up to 15 points) and domicile credits (15 points) may be given to eligible candidates who are successful on the oral appraisal.

This class is designated as a Special Service class to be administered under the provisions of Chapter 13 of Detroit City Code.

Candidates considered for placement in this classification may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation based on the requirements of the position.
