Job Description

Summary

This job is for substitute teachers at a state school in Colorado that serves students who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, blind, or visually impaired.

You'll step in on short notice to teach classes using prepared lesson plans, help students learn key skills, and keep the classroom safe and supportive.

It's a good fit for patient, flexible people with experience working with kids, especially those who know sign language or assistive tech for disabilities.

Requirements

Substitute Teachers are called to work on an as-needed basis; there are no set hours or guarantee of hours.

In the absence of a regular Teacher, a Substitute is responsible for providing standards-based instruction to students who are Deaf / Hard-of-Hearing or Blind / Visually Impaired.

Utilizes Colorado State Standards / benchmarks and/or lesson plans in establishing instructional goals; and provides assessments that measure whether students meet standards, in a safe and civil school environment.

Substitute Teachers are not eligible for Shift Differential Pay.

Substitute Teachers may not work over 1,560 hours during the calendar year (Jan-Dec).

Qualifications


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful experience working with children or youth required.
  • Prefer experience with Deaf / Hard-of-Hearing (HOH) children and / or with Blind / Visually Impaired children in an educational environment.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language at the Advanced level is required to work with students who are Deaf / Hard-of-Hearing.
  • Employment as a Substitute Teacher requires a current, valid Colorado Educator License or Substitute Authorization.

    CSDB is an accredited school; all faculty members need to hold (or be eligible for) an appropriate license or authorization.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
    • Ability to communicate effectively with Deaf / Hard-of-Hearing children (if applicable).
    • Knowledge of and ability to effectively implement current technologies utilized by children who are Blind / Visually Impaired (if applicable).
    • Ability to respond effectively and positively to feedback.
    • Ability to work cooperatively with others and participate effectively in a team setting.
    • Strong, positive interpersonal skills.
    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

    As a temporary employee, Substitute Teachers pay state, federal and local (if applicable) taxes, Medicare tax, and contribute to the Colorado Public Employees' Retirement Association (PERA). They also receive Workers' Compensation coverage. A temporary employee does not receive health/dental/life insurance benefits and does not receive annual/holiday pay. Temporary employees are called to work on an as-needed basis; there are no set hours or guarantee of hours.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    • Selected applicants must verify experience / highest degree held.
    • Direct deposit of paycheck is required.
    • CSDB is a non-smoking facility in its entirety.
    • Selected applicants must comply with the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind Drug-Free Workplace Policy, and other policies.
    • As required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA), selected applicant must verify, within 72 hours of employment, his / her legal right to be employed in the United States.
    • Selected applicant(s) will be required to submit to and pass a background check, to include Colorado and Federal criminal history checks, employment verification, and professional / personal reference checks.
