MISSION:
It is the mission of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) to impact and transform young lives, strengthen families, and support safer communities through targeted prevention and rehabilitation.
JOB PURPOSE:
Under direct supervision of the registered nurse provides evidence-based nursing care, completes medication administration of specific oral and topical medications, monitors for medication adverse reactions/side effects, while performing daily basic nursing care skills to assist the licensed staff in the delivery of medical care within the medical clinic.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under supervision of a registered nurse, nurse practitioner or physician, performs a wide range of clinical tasks related to patient care.
Conducts intake screenings and interviews for juveniles at the facility, to include the collection of health information, vitals, and laboratory specimens.
Under supervision of a registered nurse, nurse practitioner or physician, administers and accurately records the administration of medications to juveniles as directed by the Nursing Administrator, Nurse Manager, and/or designee.
Observes, records, and reports to the registered nurse symptoms, and conditions of juveniles that could be related to medication interactions, adverse drug reactions, or medication side effects.
Administers these medications and nursing treatments to include first aide care, as prescribed by the Physician in accordance with established policies and procedures of SCDJJ.
May assist with administrative and logistics functions for daily clinic operations.
Maintains supply levels and order supplies, ensures that the medical equipment is properly maintained and functioning accurately.
Attends all required meetings and trainings and performs other related duties as assigned to support the agency and its mission.
STATE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
A high school diploma or GED and current enrollment in an accredited nursing school program pursuing a Registered Nurse (RN) degree with a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale and will graduate within twelve to twenty-four months after the completion of nursing fundamentals; or has graduated from nursing school and is pending NCLEX exam results.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Experience with electronic health records and knowledge of HIPAA preferred.
Ability to interact with patients, as well as collect and assemble information in a clear and concise manner.
Understand, execute, and convey oral and written instructions, carry out medical provider medication orders, communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Exercises judgment and discretion in interpreting and applying DJJ policies and procedures.
Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with staff members, personnel in other departments, and the general public.
