Job Description

Summary

This job involves teaching and supporting adolescent and adult patients in a mental health hospital, focusing on special education, skill-building, and GED preparation to help them manage disabilities and reintegrate into the community.

Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Pueblo (CMHHIP)
As a cornerstone of the Pueblo community for over a century, Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Pueblo (CMHHIP) is a leading employer, provider of quality mental health services, and a community partner. CMHHIP is a 24 hour behavioral health acute care facility that is intended to provide a safe, secure, and therapeutic setting for patients with both psychiatric and medical issues. The services provided include evaluation and treatment for patients who are severely mentally ill, and the goal of this facility is to return patients to their optimal level of functioning and assist them in returning to the community as appropriate.




Requirements

This position is full time on-site at CMHHIP, Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

About the Position:

This position exists to provide educational programming for adolescent and adult forensic patients.

The primary need is to provide special education services and case management for youth 12-21 with disabilities.

This position provides educational experiences that are integral to patient therapy allowing many patients to advance their knowledge, learn coping skills related to their disability, and study for their GED.

In addition, federal legislation such as the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and the state of Colorado's Exceptional Children's Educational Act (ECEA) mandate a free and appropriate education for individuals under the age of twenty-two and or patients with Individualized Educational Plans.

This position allows us to better meet our legal obligations to patients such as maintaining Individualized Education Plans and providing educational programming to patients.

Duties in this position include:

Instruction:

  • Provides formal academic and therapeutic individual and group instruction to adolescents and adults in the areas of prosocial education, affective education, computer education, competency restoration for special needs, Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT), special education, remedial education, GED, and general academic education

  • Individualizes education to meet the needs of the student's Individualized Education Plan (IEP).


Medical Records/Assessment/Monitoring:
  • Provides treatment team with formal and informal assessments of individual student’s' academic, social, affective, and job-related needs

  • Develops an individualized Education Plan and plan of care with measurable goals, objectives, and interventions

  • Monitors student progress and behaviors within the education program and records weekly/monthly progress and observations through designated electronic health records

  • Utilizes learning programs including educational software, academic books, worksheets, and resources to monitor student progress, compile reports, and improve student learning

  • Reads and reviews plan of care on all patients under the employee’s charge as they are formulated or updated and signs each new or revised plan of care ensuring educational objectives and interventions are entered into the patient’s plan of care

  • Works with treatment teams and care providers to coordinate educational and therapeutic interventions and treatment schedules

  • Shares information about the student’s affective, academic, vocational, treatment goals, and behavioral progress utilizing weekly progress notes, team meetings, treatment plan reviews, and department meetings

Information Dissemination and Professional Development:
  • Participates in regularly scheduled unit, program, department, and team meetings as required by the supervisor

  • Attends patient staffing/plan of care meetings as needed to facilitate program implementation and communicate patient progress in the education program

  • Increases instructional skills and strategies, and is knowledgeable of current occupational trends

  • Maintains licensure requirements through participation in department and program meetings, in-services, and professional growth activities

  • Utilizes new and existing technologies, keyboarding skills, and computers to improve communication, improve job efficiency, input data, maintain electronic health record notes, maintain records, and exchange information using email

  • Maintains and develops competencies and skills by attending mandatory training and special training as needed and assigned

  • Complies with all CMHHIP requirements for in-service training and meets the necessary requirements for maintaining appropriate licensure and certification

  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience:
All Teaching Assignments:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a field of study related to the work assignment.
  • Current, valid Initial or Professional Teacher license issued by the Colorado Department of Education.
Substitutions:
All Teaching Assignments:

Current, valid Interim Teacher license, or Temporary Educator Eligibility Authorization will substitute for the Colorado Initial or Professional Teacher license.

Academic Teaching Assignments only:

Current, valid Colorado Adult Basic Education Authorization, Initial Special Services, or Special Services license will substitute for the Colorado Initial or Professional Teacher license.

Vocational Teaching Assignments only:

The educational and experience requirements of the Colorado Community College System for the specific vocational credential related to the work assigned to the position will substitute for the degree and license requirements.

Special Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Special Education
  • A current/valid Colorado Teacher License with endorsements in secondary education 7-12
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with case managing and writing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
  • Experience effectively utilizing computerized learning programs
  • Experience with differentiated instruction; developing lessons. curriculum and providing instruction to meet the needs of multiple learners.
  • Proficient use of assessment data to inform and drive instructional practice
  • Experience working with students with special needs across the spectrum of eligibility categories

  • Successfully pass all modules of the CMHHIP New Employee Orientation core curriculum to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics
  • Possess the physical ability to successfully complete hospital-adopted physical interventions and CPR
  • Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist
  • Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled containment to the floor
  • Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for using a defensive tactic
  • Kneel on one or both knees and stand up again with multiple repetitions
  • Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety
  • Seize, hold, control or subdue violent or assaultive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury
  • Demonstrate body agility, strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently
  • Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations
  • Ability to read and comprehend the English language; effectively and fluently communicates in English, both verbally and in writing
  • Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings
  • Travel –Willing and able to travel
  • 2-step TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire

CDHS Selection Process Explanation

Employment history is calculated on a full-time basis (40/hrs. per week). Part-time employment is calculated on a prorated basis to determine qualifications.
