Full Salary Range: $3,844.00 - $5,382.00/month; $43,128.00 - $64,584.00/year

Requirements

About the Work Unit
The Executive Security Branch (ESB) is a special unit of the Colorado State Patrol. The unit consists of troopers, civilian security guards and command center workforce. The ESB provides 24-hour security at the State Capitol complex and at the Governor's Residence with transportation and security for Governor and the first Family. In addition, the unit provides protection and security services to the secretary of state, attorney general and state treasurer.

Work Environment
100% In-person position.
Work unit core business hours, i.e. 24/7 Rotating Schedule, working rotating shifts including nights, weekends and holidays, Mon-Fri, 8 am-5 pm.

About the Job
This position is a first-level supervisor with the responsibilities of guiding and supervising security officers in the performance of their duties. This position exists to ensure state buildings are secure 24 hours a day and seven days a week. This position patrols and monitors activities on the capitol complex properties regularly to discourage criminal acts and ensure the environment is safe and secure. This position interacts with the public, including legislators, during legislative sessions. Must be able to successfully navigate in stressful situations, including politically charged situations.

Job Responsibilities
  • Supervision
    • Supervises work unit as a first-line supervisor: scheduling and assigning security personnel to posts or patrols, advising employees in handling problems, and administering and monitoring unit- level programs and operations in order to carry out agency objectives and written directives.
    • Develops and documents security procedures, policies, or standards.
    • Initiates and reviews correspondence, as well as analyzing and disseminating information to subordinate members.
    • Observes operations, processes, and/or practices and methodologies for quality assurance and liability mitigation.
    • Guides, trains, coaches and develops employees in the accomplishment of duties and professional goals.
    • Sets work expectations to provide the highest levels of customer service.
    • Coordinates with the Security Manager and acts in the capacity of OIC in their absence.
    • Develops, implements and evaluates employee performance, measuring daily performance of security officers and implementing improvement strategies.
    • Plans and provides training of security officers to maintain standard of the industry, including all safety aspects of job duties.
    • Provides documentation to support recommended corrective and disciplinary actions.
    • Addresses employee complaints and resolves informal grievances.
    • Monitors the behavior of security employees to ensure adherence to quality standards, deadlines, or procedures.

  • Security

    • Provides the day-to-day security of the State Capitol and other Capitol complex buildings: patrolling and monitoring activities within the Capitol complex to ensure a safe environment.

    • Conducts interior and exterior security tours of state buildings.

    • Identifies unauthorized visitors and potential problems such as fire, water leaks, and vandalism.

    • Interacts with visitors, tenants, and other outside authorities.

    • Provides services to tenants that may include but are not limited to unlocking doors, motorist assists, after-hour escorts to private vehicles, and flying ceremonial flags.

    • Controlling the entrance and departure of employees and visitors and vehicles, as well as managing and operating controlled access points, operating magnetometers, and x-ray machines.

Qualifications

Note, to be considered for this position, you must meet one of the following options for consideration.

Two (2) years of relevant experience providing professional security services or in law enforcement-related roles.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must be a Colorado Resident at the time of application.
  • Requires a valid Colorado Driver's License.
  • Must be willing to take job-related formal training courses.
  • This position includes physical demands that include stooping, standing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and ability to walk up and down the stairs.
  • This position operates 24 hour/ 7 days a week. You will be required to workday shift, swing shift, and graveyard shifts.
  • This position must be available for schedules that may be changed or modified to meet the needs of the security unit during critical or high-profile events.
  • Must be willing to drive a State vehicle to the State Patrol Academy for training.
  • Applicants must be willing and able to pass an extensive background investigation that includes a polygraph examination, fingerprints and drug testing. Hired employees are subject to random drug testing.
  • If any disqualifying information is discovered at any stage of the selection process, you may be removed from consideration. If you fail to follow instructions during the polygraph exam you may be removed from the process.
  • Position may require occasional travel to the State Patrol Academy.
  • Applicants must be able to meet and maintain Colorado State Patrol ESB Security Unit appearance standards which includes body markings, body modifications, jewelry, piercings, cosmetics, and hair in accordance with the Colorado State Patrol Personal Appearance policy upon employment, at time of appointment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND/OR SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience with scheduling, staffing and resource allocation
  • Demonstrated ability to implement and reinforce security goals, policies, and operational standards
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities
  • Completion of leadership training, certifications, demonstrated experience leading others, or other professional development related to supervision is highly desirable.
  • Must be able to successfully navigate stressful situations, including politically charged situations.
  • Excellent computer skills (Google and Microsoft Products)
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust, provide clear direction, and maintain professional working relationships
  • Experience de-escalating and resolving conflicts involving customers, employees, or the public
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), including the ability to write reports in a clear and concise manner
  • Strong attention to detail when completing responsibilities of job.
  • Strong decision-making skills, with the ability to assess situations quickly and take appropriate action in emergency situations.
  • Experience applying policies and procedures consistently and appropriately in operational settings
