The Attorney General's Office is not a law enforcement agency. This is a law enforcement position working in a legal office as an investigator.

The Special Investigator for the Criminal Division oversees and handles investigative activities related to the Criminal Division and provides leadership to the Division Investigators directly and through the Division Director, advising on policies, procedures, equipment, training, and other concerns for the agency investigators. The investigator must also be prepared to handle and provide assistance in very complex investigations from beginning through resolution in court. This role collaborates with external agencies, conducts outreach, handles law enforcement referrals, and addresses complex situations arising within and related to the Criminal Division's work. The Senior Investigator is also responsible for using training and experience to safely assist prosecutors and staff in visiting crime scenes, locating and meeting with witnesses, and preparing for court.
  • Work as a team member with the Criminal Division, appellate, prosecution, and SGJ unit attorneys to assist in assessing cases and determining what assistance can be provided.
  • Interview potential witnesses and suspects and procure necessary physical, documentary, or other evidence. Document progress of investigation. Maintain files and evidence for assigned investigations. Maintain a high level of organization to ensure that investigations are completed.
  • Coordinate administrative details of witness interviews, evidence collection, and personal arrangements for required out-of-town travel.
  • Assist prosecutors in trial preparation.

    Providing leadership and guidance on the most complex investigations from the charge through the court process to resolution, utilizing training and experience to take prosecutors and staff to crime scenes and to locate and interview witnesses, including documenting the meetings for use in the criminal case.

    Provides leadership and assistance to all investigative staff and assists prosecutors in preparing cases to be presented in trial, and is prepared to testify as needed in all phases of the prosecution of these complex cases.

  • Handles inquiries regarding cases and investigations within the office and must establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, law enforcement at all levels, judicial personnel, professional and nonprofessional individuals, and the general public.
  • Evidence Custodian for Attorney General's Office Investigators
  • Complete necessary and required training on a yearly basis. Stay current with changes in law enforcement legislation. Maintain equipment in good working order and comply with applicable policies.

    Assist Division investigators with meeting training and certification requirements, and other staff as needed, with background investigations and other duties to remain compliant with the certification needed to run a prosecution office.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Attorney General, Chief Deputy Attorney General, or Deputy Attorney General.

Requirements

Fifteen (15) years’ experience as a certified law enforcement officer conducting investigations or performing other law enforcement duties. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for 4 years of work experience.

Additional Requirements:
  • Position requires the applicant to maintain a Class I Law Enforcement Certification through the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
  • Position may require overnight travel, working nights/weekends.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.

  • Knowledge of the laws, rules, and regulations applicable to the job.
  • Knowledge of the policies, procedures, techniques, practices, and principles of conducting investigations.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and direct investigative programs.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations, determine pertinent facts, reach reasonable conclusions, and propose solutions.
  • Ability to present clear, concise, and comprehensive written and oral reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, law officers, judicial personnel, professional and nonprofessional individual,s and the general public.
  • Ability to supervise and train subordinates.
