Under direct supervision, the
Solid Waste Compliance Specialist determine facility compliance with applicable environmental laws, regulations, and policies that pertain to the
Bureau of Regional and Laboratory Services solid waste program. Develop advanced knowledge and understanding of the solid waste program.
Job Responsibilities:- Performs compliance inspections of permitted facilities. Performs all functions in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures Manual.
- Determines and documents compliance with applicable environmental laws, regulations and policies that pertain to solid waste disposal.
- Provides accurate and legally defensible data documenting inspections and/or impacts of discharges to the environment and public health.
- Submits reports within the required time frames and makes referrals as appropriate.
Respond to or participate in the investigation of complaints of solid waste concerns; evaluate the potential causes, initiate corrective actions, or contact responsible parties to ensure the complaint is resolved in a timely manner.
Monitor progress of corrective actions taken to solve problems causing unsatisfactory reports. Initiate enforcement actions where appropriate.
Assist in providing technical assistance and consultation to industries and the general public on state and federal solid waste regulations and standards.
- Perform other duties as required, which includes, but is not limited to, attending periodic staff meetings and training.
Requirements
- An associate degree in a related technical field.
- OR a high school diploma and two (2) years of environmental health or related experience. Certification in the environmental field qualifies as related experience.
Note: Degrees in a related technical field include, but are not limited to, Earth sciences, chemistry, biology, physics, soil science, environmental science, mathematics, etc.

- Ability to successfully complete prescribed technical coursework and pass any test relevant to the position within the probationary period or trial period.
- Ability to bend, climb and stoop to conduct inspections.
- Ability to wear the required safety equipment as needed including, but not limited to, hard hats, safety glasses, and safety boots.
- Ability to walk on uneven terrain.
- May require:
- Daily travel throughout the state.
- Occasional overnight travel.
- Participation on the Environmental Response Team and is subject to on call or call back 24/7.
Qualifications
Familiarity with solid waste methods and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).Experience inspecting solid waste facilities.Knowledge of environmental health regulations.Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively.Proficiency with Microsoft Office Professional (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
