The Screen-out Element for this position is the ability to perform the duties of a WG-8 Ship Restorer as demonstrated by working under close supervision including performing work related to the maintenance, repair, fabrication, and/or installation of wooden components of ships and/or boats including components such as hull planking, structural members, ceiling and deck planks, masts, booms, spars, and/or yardarms; using knowledge of woods and characteristics; joining timber and/or wood; using fasteners for woods; using handheld power tools, and hand tools related to woodworking; using measuring instruments to determine dimensions for cutting and fitting or wood.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Major Duties:

  • Initial work assignments at the WG-5 and WG-8 level are selected to provide appropriate training
  • At the full performance level, WG-10, you will perform the duties below:
  • You will manufacture, install, and set rake of masts and yards.
  • You will fit, steam, bend, and secure hull planking using steam boxes and bending tables.
  • You will manufacture, fit, and install ceiling plank, decking, margin pieces, and caulk seams and butts.
  • You will conduct inspections of ship’s components.
  • You will manufacture masts, booms, spares, and yardarms.
  • You will use hand tools, table saws, bands saws, jointers, and other shop machinery.
  • You will work from blueprints.
  • You will use Surveyor level and transit.
  • You will assist other trades, as needed.
