Summary

This senior materials engineer role at the Naval Air Systems Command involves leading investigations into why aircraft parts fail, developing tests to fix those issues, and recommending changes to materials and manufacturing to keep Navy planes safe and ready.

Full Job Description

You will serve as a SENIOR MATERIALS ENGINEER in the Materials Engineering Division, Air Vechile Engineering Department of FLEET READINESS CENTER SOUTHWEST.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Experience with planning, coordinating, developing, refining, and conducting complex Engineering and Mishap Investigations; 2) Experience with related engineering fields including such as mechanical, metallurgical, and aeronautical engineering; 3) Experience planning, coordinating, developing analysis that then directs changes with regard to material selection, manufacturing techniques, maintenance materials and processes relevant to the results of the investigations of failed aircraft components; and 4) Experience with fixed wing, rotary wing, and/or vertical flight aircraft systems and subsystems, industrial processes, maintenance concepts, and operational plans such as to enable the incumbent to plan technical work and make final decisions to resolve problems and concerns.

  • You will conceive plans, coordinates, develops, refines then conducts and leads the critically advanced failure analysis investigations and research that often times require the development to correctly assess and understand the modes of failure.
  • You will individually develop, or lead the development of, testing procedures to resolve the most complicated, critical in-service failure modes threatening the readiness of Naval aviation.
  • You will prepare and/or review failure analyses reports and investigations, standards, guides and instructions related to air vehicle engineering matters.
  • You will plan, coordinate, develope then directs changes with regard to material selection, manufacturing techniques, maintenance materials and processes relevant to the results of the investigations of failed aircraft components.
  • You will serve as a local and national technical expert and performs extensive and varied combinations of duties associated with the most complex airframe systems.
