DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Senior IT Professional – Public Safety Applications will play a critical role in developing, supporting and modernizing Houston Fire Department (HFD) applications.

This position requires a highly skilled software engineer with a strong background in legacy system management and modernization strategies. Key responsibilities include:

Application Development, Support & Reliability

  • Design, develop, and enhance Fire Applications to meet evolving business and operational needs.
  • Ensure continuous availability and 24/7 uptime for mission-critical Fire Applications.
  • Monitor daily operations of legacy applications to verify dependability and performance.
  • Proactively identify and resolve system issues to maintain operational stability and improve application functionality.

Modernization & Integration

  • Lead efforts to modernize HFD legacy systems and integrate them with new technologies.
  • Optimize application architecture for scalability, performance, and security.
  • Implement upgrades and security patches to meet compliance standards.

Database Management

  • Design, maintain, and optimize SQL databases supporting Fire Applications.
  • Write complex SQL queries, stored procedures, and scripts for data extraction and transformation.
  • Ensure database integrity, performance tuning, and adherence to security standards.

Collaboration & Solution Design

  • Work closely with IT Leads, HFD leadership, and cross-functional teams to understand business needs.
  • Design and deliver technical solutions aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of application architecture, configurations, and troubleshooting processes.

Data Transformation & Reporting

  • Develop interactive dashboards and reports by transforming raw data into actionable insights.
  • Ensure data integrity and usability for operational and strategic decision-making.

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE

  • Advanced software engineering skills with experience in application development, maintenance, and modernization.
  • Strong knowledge of cloud technologies, APIs, and code management.
  • Skilled proficiency in SQL and relational database management systems (RDBMS).
  • Experience integrating legacy systems with modern platforms and technologies.
  • Solid understanding of security standards and compliance requirements.

WORKING CONDITIONS

There are no major sources of discomfort, i.e., essentially normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature, and air conditioning.

Requirements

EDUCATION

Requires a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management and Information Systems (MIS) or a closely related field.

Usually has advanced technical certifications that demonstrate mastery of a specialized application.


EXPERIENCE

At least six (6) years of technology experience supporting applications.

Advanced certifications and/or greater than six (6) years applicable experience may be substituted for up to two (2) years of the education requirement.

**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6. **
