DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs clerical and administrative support tasks in the ordering, purchasing, receiving, stocking, storing issuance, distribution, maintenance and repair of various parts, tools, materials, supplies, equipment, inventory or surplus property.
The Senior Inventory Management Clerk duties will include but are not limited to:
- Ensures adherence to City and State guidelines for acquisition, storage, distribution, maintenance and disposition of inventory and associated records.
- Responsible for overseeing the detailed management of surplus and salvage inventory in a warehouse.
Compares and verifies incoming surplus items against receiving documents, verifying quantity and condition, and properly labeling and storing them leads and trains Inventory Management Clerks with surplus operations and establishes priorities and delegates workload.
Oversees and ensures inventory records for surplus are accurately maintained.
- Creates and maintains records, logs, etc. of materials received, stored, issued, delivered or distributed. Performs data entry using a purchasing and inventory control system.
- Oversees, coordinates and participates in physical inventory counts. Reconciles counts with inventory records. Resolves discrepancies.
- Maintaining accurate records of all surplus inventory using a computer system, identify discrepancies, and updating inventory databases.
- Organizing surplus items in the warehouse to optimize space and facilitate easy access, including proper labeling and rotation of stock.
- Processing requests for surplus items, coordinating their transfer to other departments within the organization, and managing the distribution process, and the disposal of materials or assets of Houston Public Works.
- Assisting with the process of selling, donating, or recycling surplus and salvage items that are no longer needed, including preparing necessary documentation.
- Maintains storerooms, warehouse and storage areas in a clean, orderly, safe and secure condition. Ensures safety and security of materials, supplies and property.
- May perform minor maintenance. Determines and disposes of expired, spoiled, damaged or obsolete items and inventory.
- Generating reports on inventory levels, usage trends, and surplus item details for management review.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The position requires lifting of heavy items of up to 60 pounds and/or walking on rough surfaces routinely and/or regular physical exertion such as climbing of ladders. Requires the ability to make coordinated gross motor movements in response to changing external stimuli within moderately demanding tolerances; or the ability to make coordinated eye/hand movements on a patterned response space within low tolerance demands with no real speed requirements.
This is a Houston Public Works Emergency Management position at the Tier I Level.
Requirements
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a high school diploma or GED.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Two (2) years of inventory control, materials management, or record keeping experience are required. May require experience in operating a forklift and other motorized or non-motorized materials handling equipment.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Valid Driver’s License and compliance with the City of Houston policy on driving (AP 2-2).
Qualifications
Preference shall be given to candidates with:
- Experience in operating a forklift and other motorized or non-motorized materials handling equipment.
- Valid Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving.

Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
