General Responsibility
Administer the database management system for statewide client server information system. Advise the manager of application development on defining goals and objectives for the information system. Develop and maintain data standards, documentation, and security and authorization procedures.

Specific Duties

Act as the database administrator. Maintain tables to ensure data integrity. Design and maintain physical data model for optimum use of resources, performance, and availability.

Manage backups, data integrity, and ensure performance of indexes.

Prepare and implement updates as well as test and implement new software to aid in the operation, performance and debugging of the database system.

Provide ad hoc queries and modify data. Provide answers to infrequent or one time queries through SQL. Synchronize data records to maintain data integrity and to enforce new or modified business rules.

Modify records through interactive SQL which cannot be fixed otherwise due to their complex nature and or inaccessibility through current applications.

  • Design and maintain data server schemas. Work with the assistant database administrator, senior system analyst, and programmers to ensure database design supports application requirements and business rules.
  • Train and supervise programming staff in utilizing database stored procedures. Install and maintain database management systems software.
  • Maintain detailed documentation in implementing all responsibilities. Develop and maintain plans to implement use of emergency server, including transfer of data to and from tape backups.
  • Perform other duties as required.

  • Requirements

    • A bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems or a related field and experience in systems development and maintenance, technical support, or the support of complex database management systems. Related experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.
    • A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in systems development and maintenance, technical support, or support of complex database management systems.
    • Must have expert knowledge of database management systems, concepts and design methodologies.
    • Must have knowledge of database structures, operating systems, data security, systems integrity and monitoring and auditing activities.
    • Must be able to prepare and present technical and nontechnical reports in a clear and concise manner.
    • Must be able to manager subordinate technical staff in the design and support of database management systems.
    • This position may require non-standard work hours to support system outage or upgrades.
    • This position may require overnight travel.
