Full Job Description

These positions may be filled for a six-month seasonal period, but can vary due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-01/26/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience.

To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time).

If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors).

This experience includes activities such as: 1) Work in the fields of geophysics, chemistry, hydrology, engineering, geology, and metallurgy.

2) Utilize ArcGIS and geospatial analysis tools to collect, manage, and interpret spatial data; create maps, perform spatial queries, and support natural resource management decisions through GIS-based analysis.3) Implement established natural resource management projects in the field (field examinations, surveys, and inventories).

4) Assist in preparation of reports, including research and preparation of graphs, charts, and tables, and draft reports. 5) Take measurements and collect field data in a natural resource setting.

6) Complete routine analyses of collected field data. 7) Facilitate natural resource protection, mitigation, and restoration activities. You must include hours per week worked.

-OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one year of directly related graduate-level education (18 semester hours) in the fields such as chemistry, hydrology, geophysics, and/or geology.

You must include transcripts.-OR- COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above.

To combine education and experience, first determine percentage of education requirement satisfied (example 1 semester of graduate study completed would be 50% of the one-year requirement).

Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

ICTAP/CTAP Statement: Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special prior­ity selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection.

Major Duties:

Serves as a technical advisor for Wilderness Character Monitoring.

Responsible for program development and implementation related to caves and karst formations, geology, soils, hydrology, hydrogeology, air quality, acoustics, paleontology.

Responsible for program development and implementation related to wilderness field operations reporting, and monitoring wilderness character, aircraft overflights, natural soundscapes, visitor use, and related fields and activities.

Prepares management and scientific reports regarding the results of protection, mitigation, restoration, inventory, monitoring, and research activities.

Following established procedures and within a defined scope, the incumbent conducts scientifically credible protection, mitigation, and restoration projects needed to prevent resource damage and to minimize human impacts.

Works closely with wilderness rangers and volunteers to implement field data collection.
