Full Job Description

This position is located in Devils Postpile National Monument, in the Division of Visitor and Resources Protection. Open to the first 101 applicants or until 02/16/2026 whichever comes first.

The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Devils Postpile National Monument is May - November but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding.

Anticipated Entry on Duty: May 2026 All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-02/16/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience.

To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time).

If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

SELECTIVE FACTOR: This position performs Emergency Medical Services, and the following skills are required: CURRENT Wilderness First Responder or higher EMS certification.

- AND - To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors).

This experience includes activities such as 1) coordinating, evaluating or directing wilderness programs and projects; (2) developing educational or interpretive programs related to wilderness; (3) coaching/mentoring wilderness or PSAR or similar, staff.

You must include hours per week worked.

-OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two full academic years of progressively higher-level graduate education OR a master's/equivalent graduate degree related to the occupation, such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled.

-OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above that when combined equals at least 100% of the minimum qualification requirement for the GS-09 level.

NOTE: Only progressive graduate education beyond the first year is credible when combining. You must include transcripts.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

ICTAP/CTAP Statement: Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection.

The Pacific West Region is recruiting for TEMPORARY seasonal positions not to exceed 1560 hours work in a service year.

Dates of employment will vary depending on funding, weather conditions and visitation.

Devils Postpile National Monument California was established in 1911 by presidential proclamation, Devils Postpile National Monument protects and preserves the Devils Postpile formation, the 101-foot high Rainbow Falls, and pristine mountain scenery.

The formation is a rare sight in the geologic world and ranks as one of the world's finest examples of columnar basalt. Its' columns tower up to 60 feet and display a striking symmetry.

This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

Telework: The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.

The Major Duties: This position will work in locations ranging from high visitor use to remote wilderness locations providing guidance and safety messages to colleagues, partners and park users.

Ensuring staff and public safety, answer complex visitor and employee questions, resolve disagreements with visitors and complete staff training for wilderness permit issuance, Leave No Trace, park regulations, and visitor contacts.

Develop and present original interpretive programs on Wilderness philosophy, policies, safety and history to the general public, special groups and park staff.

Perform resource protection foot patrols and serve as on-site point of contact for emergency responses such as lost visitors, injuries, trail closures, etc.

Patrol work includes visitor contacts and education, light trail maintenance, coordination with park partners, reporting visitor contacts , reporting non-compliance with permits, and reporting safety concerns.
