Full Job Description

The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for CUMBERLAND GAP NHP is April-October but the season may be extended or reduced due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding.

Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2026. Open to the first 50 applicants or until 02/03/2026 whichever comes first.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-02/03/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience.

To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time).

If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

To qualify for this position at the GS-1016-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-1016-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors).

Experience related to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects.

Examples of qualifying specialized experience include collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum material, or other experience related to the position to be filled.

Most positions require a particular subject-matter specialization, e.g., aeronautics, anthropology, art, geology, history, natural science, technology, biology, or zoology.

Which includes activities such as: having worked directly with and caring for museum collections, collections of museum objects, artifacts, or archives.

Having worked to identify, catalog, and document museum objects, perform routine cleaning, stabilization, or preservation of museum objects. You must include hours per week worked.

-OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full academic year of related graduate level education.

Related fields of study include art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position to be filled. You must include transcripts.

-OR- SUPERIOR ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT: Superior academic achievement (SAA) requirements are based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership. 1.

Class standing -- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.

Grade-point average (G.P.A.)-- Applicants must have a grade-point average of: a.) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or b.) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.

3. Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society -- Applicants can be considered eligible based on membership in one of the national scholastic honor societies.

These honor societies are listed by the Association of College Honor Societies, www.achsnatl.org. Transcripts must be provided.

-OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above.

To combine education and experience, first determine the percentage of experience held by dividing the number of months of qualifying full time experience possessed by 12 and then multiplying by 100.

Then determine the percentage of qualifying graduate level education completed by dividing the number of credits completed by 18, then multiply by 100. Add the percentages together.

The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Major Duties:

This location is located in CUMBERLAND GAP NHP, in the Resource Stewardship and Science Division. Duties: Handling, cleaning, and storing objects in the permanent museum collection.

This includes performing routine preservation and making recommendations for the care of objects in the museum collection.

Implementing routine housekeeping schedules, by providing daily and cyclical cleaning and monitoring of artifacts. Processing incoming and outgoing loans in accordance with NPS standards.

This includes ensuring that all loan agreements, renewal forms, and related documentation are completed and properly signed.

Maintaining museum records, including accession, catalog, and loan records in accordance with NPS standards; as well as tracking location of museum objects and archives, and assisting with annual inventories of museum collections.

Monitoring the environment of collection storage and exhibit areas by keeping records on temperature, relative humidity, and pest infestation.

Reporting on the physical conditions of storage and exhibit areas and keeping track of museum supplies and equipment.
