Requirements

In this position, you will be responsible for planning, organizing, and delegating tasks to team members, as well as preparing and signing performance evaluations for subordinate employees. You will assess the training requirements of your team and coordinate opportunities for their professional development, demonstrating effective methods and techniques as needed. Additionally, you will hold meetings with staff to communicate any changes in rules, regulations, policies, and standards that affect their roles.

You will oversee and actively participate in the rescue operations for swimmers in distress, ensuring that lifeguards are fulfilling their responsibilities both on and off duty. It is crucial to maintain vigilance among lifeguards stationed in the swimming area, ensuring they remain attentive to the public and are ready to respond swiftly and calmly in emergency situations. Your role will also involve administering first aid and CPR to injured visitors at the state park, providing assistance to patrons from the lifeguard office.

Regular inspections of swimming areas and safety equipment will be part of your duties to guarantee their safety for public use. You will patrol and monitor activities at the swimming area from various vantage points, including boats and shore stations, to maintain order and reduce the risk of accidents or drowning among swimmers and other park visitors. Remaining alert at your assigned post is essential, as you will need to scan the swimming area continuously to prevent incidents and be prepared to assist visitors in emergencies.

Ensuring adherence to the Bureau of State Parks' swimming regulations is a key responsibility, as you will follow established guidelines and procedures while informing visitors about the rules and policies of the state parks. In situations that require further enforcement, you will be responsible for contacting park rangers or the park manager. Additionally, you will inspect or supervise the inspection of safety equipment, including buoys, floats, ropes, and first aid supplies, reporting any items that require attention to the park manager or maintenance supervisor. Regular checks of swimming and beach areas for unsafe conditions will also be necessary to ensure they are safe for public enjoyment.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time seasonal employment. The season runs from May through September.
  • Work hours are 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with a 30-minute lunch
  • Work days will vary, employee will work 5 of 7 days per work week, to include weekends, holidays and all shifts as needed
  • Telework: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two seasons of experience as a Lifeguard (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.


Special Requirements:

  • All employees must obtain a valid Lifeguard Certification or Lifeguard Management Certification issued by the American Red Cross, YMCA, United States Lifesaving Association, or other authority recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of Health within 14 days of employment.
  • All employees must obtain valid certifications in standard first aid and adult, child, and infant CPR within 14 days of employment.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Legal Requirements:
  • You must pass a background investigation.
  • This position falls under the provisions of the Child Protective Services Law.
    • Under the Law, a conditional offer of employment will require submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports including, but not limited to, PA State Police clearance, PA Child Abuse history clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance.
