Job Description

Summary

This seasonal job involves hands-on maintenance and repair work on buildings, utilities, and park facilities at Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park in Alaska, including tasks like carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work to keep everything running safely and efficiently.

It's a temporary role from April to September, with possible extensions, focused on practical problem-solving in a remote outdoor setting.

A good fit would be someone with trade skills, local knowledge of the Skagway area, and experience working independently in challenging weather conditions.

Key Requirements

  • Special knowledge or expertise in the park's natural and cultural resources and their management
  • Prior experience living or working in or near Skagway, Dyea, Haines, Klukwan, Gustavus, or Juneau, Alaska
  • Ability to perform maintenance mechanic duties with minimal supervision, including assembly, installation, and repair of equipment
  • Proficiency in technical practices such as reading blueprints, using measuring instruments, and interpreting instructions and regulations
  • Knowledge of materials, tools, and equipment used in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, painting, and heating trades
  • Experience providing technical advice, conducting inspections, ensuring compliance with safety codes, and leading safety training
  • Familiarity with computer programs like Microsoft Office, Facility Management Software System (FMSS), and DOI Learn

Full Job Description

NOTE: OPM has identified this position as eligible for an exception to the typical 1039-hour season.

This exception allows up to 1560 hours which may extend the season(s) reflected in this announcement. See the Additional Information section for details.

The typical season for this position is April - September but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. The anticipated entry on duty is April 2026.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement 03/06/2026 unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Special knowledge or expertise concerning the park's or preserve's natural and/or cultural resources and the management thereof is required.

Local knowledge of the resources and the typical conditions that affect the work to be accomplished will be applied in the performance of duties.

Areas considered "near" Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park are the Municipality of Skagway Borough, which includes the communities of Skagway, Dyea, Haines, Klukwan, Gustavus, and Juneau.

-ALSO- The following are the competencies identified for this position.

Applicants are not required to address these competencies in a separate document but are encouraged to include in their resumes experience related to these competencies: Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision.

Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic). Use of measuring instruments. Ability to interpret instructions, specification, etc.

(includes blueprint reading). Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment. Knowledge of materials. Major Duties:

If selected, you will work as a Maintenance Mechanic, WG-4749-09 at Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Site.

Duties of the position include, but are not limited to the following: Involved in the design, planning, construction, rehabilitation, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of a wide variety of structures and utility systems.

Provides technical advice to co-workers. Works with crews involved in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, painting, heating, and utility system trades work.

Performs inspections and collects information. Determines best work practices and materials to complete assignments efficiently in compliance with codes, regulations and NPS goals.

Reads and interprets blueprints, code books, State and Federal Regulations and other technical information. Conducts safety training sessions.

Provides oversight of facilities and work processes to ensure compliance with State and Federal regulations.

Uses a government computer and computer programs such as Facility Management Software System (FMSS), DOI Learn and Microsoft Office, including MS Word, MS Excel and the Internet.
