Job Description

Summary

This seasonal job involves repairing and maintaining heavy vehicles and equipment like diesel trucks, loaders, and backhoes in Denali National Park, Alaska, from May to October.

You'll handle tasks such as fixing brakes, hydraulics, and tires, while also supporting shop operations and assisting other mechanics.

It's a good fit for experienced mechanics with a commercial driver's license who enjoy outdoor work in remote areas and have local knowledge of Alaska's parks.

Key Requirements

  • Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with current medical examiner's certificate
  • Experience living or working in or near Denali National Park areas (e.g., Healy, Talkeetna, Nenana)
  • Knowledge of electrical, transistorized, and non-mechanical systems affecting mechanical operations

  • Ability to use mechanic tools including power equipment, electronic test gear, gauges, and micrometers

  • Special knowledge of park natural/cultural resources and local conditions

To qualify for this position, you must possess a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at the time of application.

A current medical examiner's certificate with no disqualifying offenses is required by the anticipated entrance-on-duty listed in this announcement.

You must submit a copy of your CDL when you apply. Ensure you upload the front and back of your CDL. If selected, you must submit the medical examiner's certificate before entrance-on-duty.

Areas considered "near" Denali National Park and Preserve, Toklat, and Wonder Lake duty stations include only: Anderson, Cantwell, Chulitna, Clear, Curry, Denali Park, Ferry, Healy, Kantishna, Lake Minchumina, McKinley Village, Nenana, Nikolai, Petersville, Talkeetna, Tanana, Telida, and Trapper Creek.

-ALSO- The following are the competencies identified for this position.

Applicants are not required to address these competencies in a separate document but are encouraged to include in their resumes experience related to these competencies: Knowledge of how electrical, transistorized, and other non-mechanical systems tie in with and affect the operation of mechanical systems.

Knowledge of electric and gas welders and cutting torches, presses, metal lathes and grinders to makes welding repairs and fabricate simple parts or structural reinforcement.

Ability to use tools of trade including power equipment and electronic test equipment gauges, micrometer, etc.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work orders, to use complex shop manuals and parts catalogs and coordinate work with other mechanics. Major Duties:

The typical season for this position is May - October but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. The anticipated entry on duty is May 2026.

You will work as a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic WG-5803-10 stationed at the Denali Park duty station of Denali National Park & Preserve.

The duties of this position include but are not limited to: As instructed works as a journeyman mechanic by performing routine equipment mechanic duties.

Works on class 6/7/8 diesel trucks, loaders graders, backhoes and small equipment. Repairs air brake systems and hydraulic systems. Performs tire repairs, tire replacement and conducts safety checks.

Provides shop support work including: shop cleanup and organization. Provides assistance to higher graded mechanics.
