Job Description

Summary

This seasonal job involves hands-on maintenance and repairs on buildings, utilities, and boats in a national park setting near Lake Superior, using skilled trades like woodworking, painting, and masonry to keep historic structures in good shape.

Workers will also operate trucks and motorboats in various weather conditions while performing routine upkeep on equipment like generators and pumps.

Key Requirements

  • Journeyman-level experience in at least two trades such as carpentry, plumbing, painting, masonry, water treatment, or roofing

  • Proficiency in interpreting instructions, blueprints, and specifications
  • Knowledge of tools, equipment maintenance, assembly, installation, and repair
  • Skill in technical practices including use of measuring instruments
  • Valid driver's license and safe operation of vehicles up to 20,000 GVW and motorboats up to 30 feet
  • Experience operating and maintaining portable generators and water pumps

Full Job Description

The primary purpose of the position is to perform building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties. Incumbent utilizes journeyman knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts.

All of the duties described by this position may not exist in each location, but that should not preclude use of this position.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT) Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc.

(includes blueprints reading) Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation Repair, etc.

Knowledge of materials Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments Vehicle Operation SCREEN OUTS: Minimum Qualifications: Have experience that demonstrates the ability to perform most of the work as a Maintenance Mechanic at the journeyman level.

At this level, performed the work without more than normal supervision.

Performed at this level in two of the following trades: Carpentry, Plumbing, Painting, Masonry, Water Treatment Plant Operations, or Roofing.

Driver's License: You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required.

You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record.

You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.

If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration.

Major Duties:

Perform a variety of duties as a maintenance mechanic on buildings and utilities using journeyman skills in sheet metal, iron, wood crafting, masonry, glazing and painting some of these are historic building and utilities.

Work with the building and utilities in constructing new, alter or repair, rehabilitate or modify existing historic items such as windows, doors, posts, beams, stairways, railings interior and exterior moldings siding, rafters, roofing, etc Operates trucks up to 20,000 GVW on public roads and motor boats up to 30' in length safely on Lake Superior in all weather conditions.

Operates and performs preventive maintenance on portable generators, and portable water pumps.

Cut-off Dates: This is an open continuous announcement, in which applications are collected over several months, and have multiple cut-off dates.
