Job Description

Summary

This seasonal role with the National Park Service involves creating and delivering educational programs for school groups and youth, both in-person and online, to promote learning about parks and nature.

It's a temporary position lasting up to about 9 months, based in Estes Park, Colorado, starting in late 2026.

Ideal candidates are enthusiastic educators or those with experience working with kids, like teachers, camp counselors, or volunteers in community outreach.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-04, such as preparing and presenting education programs to elementary school groups or providing related instruction (e.g., as an environmental educator, teacher, camp counselor, or scout leader)
  • OR a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university

Full Job Description

Incumbents will serve as Education Technicians, providing education and community outreach activities.

These positions may be filled for a seasonal period, up to 1560 hours, but can vary due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding.

Anticipated Entry on Duty: August - December 2026 (locations vary). This announcement has a 300-application limit and may close early if the application limit is reached.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience.

To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time).

If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: I possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level.

In making this claim, I understand that specialized experience is experience that involved preparing and presenting education programs to elementary school groups, and providing pre- and post-activity instruction.

Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, environmental educator, teacher, teaching assistant, camp counselor, scout leader, coach, or other similar work.

-OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least a 4-year course of study or a bachelor's degree at an accredited college or university. You must include transcripts.

-OR- COMBINATION: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above.

For example, 6 months of specialized experience at the GS-04 level (50% of the required experience) and 90 semester credits of appropriate undergraduate education (50% of the education as in 'C' above).

Note: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. You must include transcripts.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

ICTAP/CTAP Statement: Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special prior­ity selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection.

Well qualified means that the applicant meets the following: OPM qualification standards for the position; all selective placement factors, where applicable; special qualifying conditions that OPM has approved for the position, where applicable; is physically qualified with reasonable accommodation, where appropriate to satisfactorily perform the duties of the position upon entry; and is rated by the organization at least at the well qualified level on all competencies.

Major Duties:

Prepares and presents curriculum-based educational programs both virtually and in person, and develops and presents youth programs for all levels of students.

Uses a variety of presentation techniques and education philosophy and methods.

Presents formal interpretive programs, conducts informal roving visitor contacts, staffs the visitor center, and assists with the junior ranger program.
