Job Description

Summary

This temporary seasonal job with the Bureau of Land Management involves fieldwork to survey, excavate, and document cultural, historic, and prehistoric sites in Colorado's rugged landscapes, along with office-based research and report preparation.

It's ideal for someone with a background in archaeology or related studies who enjoys outdoor adventures and has experience handling physical challenges in remote areas.

Information about these cities and the surrounding area can be found below: Monte Vista, CO Canon City, CO (CO Springs GS Rate) We expect to fill 1 vacancy at this time at one of the above locations (not both); however, additional positions may be filled from this announcement if they become available.

Minimum Qualifications for the 0102 Archeological Technician Series at the GS-07: You must possess one full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity that included performing the following duties: (1) Researching reference materials such as site maps, existing archeological inventory information, books and other written data for possible cultural sites within an area slated for development; (2) Preparing or assisting with preparation of forms for determination of eligibility and/or nomination of sites to the National Register of Historic Places.

OR You must have completed one full year of graduate level education (18 semester hours) that is directly related to the position.

Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. The education must be obtained in an accredited college or university.

You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement .Physical Demands: Work requires some physical exertion such as bending and walking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated.

Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to efficiently perform the work of the position, and to provide for personal comfort and safety.

This can include tools, personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods of work away from vehicles.

Work Environment: Office work is performed in an adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated area.

During fieldwork is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme and adverse weather conditions, and injuries and discomforts from pests and animals. Employee will adhere to all safety rules and regulations.

Major Duties:

  • Performs literature searches of readily available reference material.
  • Participates in cultural resource inventories.
  • Excavates sites.
  • Requires the use of motor vehicles.
  • Researches files and records to obtain information about sites scheduled for cultural inventories.
  • Identifies cultural, historic and/or paleontological resources.
  • Searches surface areas for historic and prehistoric remains and artifacts.
  • Reviews reference material to aid in identification of artifacts recovered during inventories.
  • Complies, summarizes and interprets data obtained during inventories.
  • Prepares statements of work for non-complex cultural resource field inventories.
