This seasonal job with the National Park Service involves creating maps and handling geographic data for landscape preservation projects, including fieldwork to collect information and using computer tools to build and edit digital maps.
It's a hands-on role that supports park management by ensuring accurate spatial data for planning and analysis.

This position is in Olmsted Center for Landscape Preservation Cultural Division of the Resource Science and Stewardship Directorate.
The purpose of the position is to perform a wide variety of tasks involved in the development of cartographic products including, but not limited to field data collection, compilation, editing and production (manual or digital, manual and/or color); Global Positioning System (GPS); and Geographic Information System (GIS) technical support functions.

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors).
This experience includes activities such as: performing tasks involved in the development of GIS databases and maps, including data collection, editing, and interpretation; using technology for the field capture of data, including use of GPS and other survey equipment; processing and correcting field captured spatial data, as well existing legacy spatial data to ensure accuracy and reliability; utilizing GIS for the statistical interpolation of spatial data and mapping the results.
You must include hours per week worked.
-OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least One full year of graduate education in one of the following fields or course work: cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, remote sensing, algebra, trigonometry, and calculus.
Not more than 9 of the 18 semester hours should have been in mathematics or statistics. You must include transcripts.

As a Cartographic Technician GS-1371-07 you will perform the following major duties: Visit field sites to gather information, utilizing accepted field mapping techniques which may include Global Positioning System (GPS), total station, tape and compass, alidade and plan table or any combination thereof.
Input routine and complex spatial and non-spatial digital data to draft format, field compilation, Computer-Aided Design (CAD) or Geographic Information System (GIS).
Perform proper verification and check procedures to ensure the resultant database or drawing files are free as possible from error.
Inform staff of the types of information that can be derived from various remote sensors, GPS, GIS and field mapping techniques in relation to the proposed projects.
Produce user ready original or derived thematic maps in variable formats and media at various scales with appropriate symbols, legends and title blocks.
Produce publication ready materials with appropriate printer information, collation sheets, layout, paste up and photograph preparation.

The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Olmsted Center for Landscape Preservation (OCLP) is May to November but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding.
Anticipated Entry on Duty: May 17, 2026. Physical Demands: The work requires long periods of sitting in front of computer terminals.
Some prolonged bending, crouching, lifting (up to 50 pounds), climbing, and reaching are required to perform routine hardware maintenance and move equipment.
Digitizing data requires extended periods of standing, sitting and stretching over large drafting tables while recording/measuring map data with a computer mouse.
Working Conditions: The work is usually performed in an office setting. Outdoor field work in varied climatic and terrain conditions is required.
