Full Job Description

The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for CUMBERLAND GAP NHP is April-October but the season may be extended or reduced due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding.

Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2026. Open to the first 50 applicants or until 02/10/2026 whichever comes first.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-02/10/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience.

To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time).

If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

To qualify for this position at the GS-1317-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-1317-06 level in the federal service (Obtained in either public or private sectors).

Specialized experience is experience directly related to the work of the position being filled.

Examples of qualifying specialized experience for this position include: performing tasks involved in the development of GIS databases and maps, including data collection, editing, and interpretation; Using technology for the field capture of data, including use of GPS and other survey equipment; Processing and correcting field captured spatial data, as well as existing legacy spatial data to ensure accuracy and reliability; Utilizing GIS for the statistical interpolation of spatial data and mapping the results.

-OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full year of graduate level education (18 semester hours) in courses directly related to the work of this position such as cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, remote sensing, algebra, trigonometry, or calculus.

Six months of the specialized experience (50% of the experience requirement), and 14 semester hours of graduate level study in courses directly related to the work of this position (50% of the qualifying education).

This position is located in CUMBERLAND GAP NHP, in the Resource Stewardship and Science Division.

Collect geospatial data using mobile devices and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receivers Manage geospatial data for park planning, science, and management using ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, and other common software following all appropriate data standards of the National Park Service.

Train colleagues, interns, partners, and others in GPS data collection and GIS data management.

Produce maps using GIS and graphic design software for project reports, park planning, and public outreach.

Operate, maintain and update hardware and software as necessary for collecting and managing geospatial data, and make recommendations for purchases.

Maintain active communications with key partners and colleagues, including staff from partner organizations, and the National Park Service GIS user community.
