Job Description

Summary

This seasonal job with the National Park Service involves working outdoors in Pennsylvania to manage and study plants, such as removing invasive species, collecting data on plant life, and helping with conservation projects in national parks.

It's a temporary role starting in April 2026, lasting up to about 1560 hours, focused on hands-on environmental work.

Full Job Description

NOTE: In support of Executive Order (EO) 14189 "Celebrating America's 205th Birthday" and EO 14314 "Making America Beautiful Again by Improving our National Parks" the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has approved an exception to the 1039 hour time limitation for this position.

This approval extends the time limitation to 1560 hours for this temporary seasonal appointment.

The Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2026 All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-02/19/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience.

To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time).

If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors).

Specialized experience includes: Carrying out field studies on plants and/or plant ecology; inventorying or monitoring or controlling exotic plants.

Use statistical methods and procedures to perform testing of field data collected.

Research activity or control program work, nursery work that required the growing and maintenance of plants in a controlled environment.(You must include the number of hours worked per week within your resume.) -OR- EDUCATION: Successfully completed one full year (18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours) of graduate level course work, from an accredited college or university, leading to a master's degree with a major study directly related to the position to be filled.

Graduate study must have been in a field of study that is directly related to the work of this position, i.e., scientific or technical study, such as botany, plant physiology, plant anatomy, plant taxonomy or related courses in the field of plant biology.

To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours or equivalent earned towards a graduate degree that are directly related to the work of the position and divide by 18 semester hours or equivalent.

Then take the number of months of full-time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Major Duties:

The major duties for this position include: Performs exotic plant control and eradication. Organizes, schedules, and executes a wide variety of established natural resource management projects.

Collects and organizes field data using standardized data collection procedures and equipment. Recommends management actions based on prescribed guidelines in existing park plans.

Ensures adequate quality control of data collected. Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing, walking, and bending often required.

Heavy items (e.g., equipment and packs up to 50 pounds) must be lifted and carried on a routine basis. Working Conditions: The work is performed in an office, laboratory, and in the field.

Field work includes exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, pesticides, poisonous plants, biting insects, and wild animals. Laboratory work may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals.
