MISSION:
It is the mission of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) to impact and transform young lives, strengthen families, and support safer communities through targeted prevention and rehabilitation.

JOB PURPOSE:

Under general supervision, serves as the initial law enforcement responder and school safety coordinator for campus emergencies. Provides security for special school events or functions such as sporting events, or at the request of school administration and approval of the Director of Public Safety. Assists other law enforcement officers with outside investigations concerning students attending the school. Escorts unauthorized, unruly visitors, or terminated employees off DJJ campuses. Establishes and maintains a close partnership with school administrators in order to provide a safe school environment. Enforce State and Department policies, rules, and regulations for the protection and security of youth, staff, visitors, and property of the South Carolina DJJ.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serves as School Resource Officer responding to and resolving calls for service.

Performs law enforcement duties by patrolling S.C. Department of Juvenile Justice Campuses to ensure the safety and security of persons and property, searches for and apprehends AWOLS, assists units in controlling youth disturbances; and ensures proper notifications are made to management.

Conducts routine patrols of assigned campuses to include buildings and parking lots.

Serves as the initial law enforcement first responder and school safety coordinator for campus emergencies.

Provides security for special school events or functions such as sporting events, or at the request of school administration.

Prepares shift reports, and other records.

Operates communication network and vehicles.

Ensures that vehicles and equipment are properly maintained.

Transports youth as deemed necessary.

Investigates escapes and vehicle accidents occurring on agency property.

Conducts other investigations such as drugs, theft, contraband, and youth abuse.

Assists other law enforcement officers with outside investigations concerning students attending the school.

Escorts unauthorized, unruly visitors, or terminated employees off DJJ campuses.

Establishes and maintains a close partnership with school administrators in order to provide a safe school environment.

Performs other related job duties deemed necessary by the Director of Public Safety and/or or the Inspector General.

Requirements

STATE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency. A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required law enforcement experience.

Special Requirement: Certification by the Law Enforcement Training Council in accordance with 23-23-40 of the Code of Laws of South Carolina 1976.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:


Must be knowledgeable of state laws to ensure the protection and security of persons and property of all DJJ facilities.

Knowledge of modern law enforcement techniques and procedures; how to collect and preserve evidence; legal rights of suspects and victims; functions and interrelationships of SCDJJ.

Skilled in the operation of LE vehicles, weapons, and communications equipment; the ability to correctly evaluate situations and make good decisions; the ability to deal firmly, yet tactfully, with general public; to read, write and comprehend materials.

The ability to provide classroom instructions on a variety of topics including, but not limited to, narcotics, safety, relationship skills, de-escalation techniques, conflict resolution, and responsible decision making.

Essential Position: Must be able to work with aggressive delinquent youth daily in accordance with SCDJJ Policies and Procedures. Must be able to lift 50+ lbs., sit 1-3 hours per day, stand 1-3 hours per day, walk 1-3 hours per day and ability to work varied hours to meet organizational needs. Deal with confidential and sensitive information. Prioritize multiple competing priorities during high stress situations. Travel overnight occasionally.

This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation, or recapture of youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice and the employee may have direct and indirect contact with youth within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice. Training applicable to these duties will be provided.

Qualifications

PREFERRED AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:


Current SC CJA Class 1 Law enforcement Officer and the School Resource Officer Certification from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
