Summary

This job involves inspecting aviation facilities and operations at a U.S. Army base to ensure safety standards are met, identifying risks, and working with teams to fix issues and prevent accidents.

About the Position: This position is a TERM position NTE 5 Years. It is a time limited position and may be extended up to a maximum of 8 years.

This position may be converted to a permanent, career or career-conditional appointment without further competition.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Managing safety or occupational health program elements; 2) Applying safety and occupational health laws, regulations, practices and procedures to advise on or resolve technical matters dealing with occupational safety and health requirements; and 3) Inspecting workplaces, processes, products, or other systems for compliance with established safety and occupational health policies or standards and to identify potential new hazards.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service GS-11.

In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess the Aviation Safety Officer Course completion certification.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Attention to Detail Customer Service Flexibility Influencing/Negotiating Integrity/Honesty Interpersonal Skills Learning Reading Comprehension Reasoning Self-Management Stress Tolerance Teamwork Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).

Major Duties:

  • Conduct of frequent and recurring inspections to ensure compliance with safety standards, the documentation of findings, and coordinating with maintenance teams for timely repairs.
  • Proactively identifies potential hazards through the conduct of risk assessments, evaluates risk levels, and develops risk mitigation strategies.
  • Conducts inspections, promotes a reporting culture, and analyzes FOD to enhance safety.
  • Performs duties as the Directorate of Aviation Operations Ground Safety Officer, essential to the promotion of a safe work environment through a comprehensive set of responsibilities.
  • Conducts facility Standard Army Safety and Occupational Health Inspections (SASOHI) to evaluate compliance with safety standards, document findings, coordinate with maintenance teams for timely repairs, and ensure corrective actions are completed.
  • Conducts investigations of ground accidents, by gathering evidence, identifying root causes, and preparing detailed reports with recommendations to preclude recurrence.
  • Performs US Army Garrison-Fort Hood Aviation Safety Officer duties, playing a key role in the safety of Fort Hood aviation operations in support of the Garrison Commander through a series of structured responsibilities.
  • Conduct of routine and recurring inspections of installation helipads to assess their condition and readiness, document findings, coordinate maintenance for timely repairs, and ensure corrective actions are completed.
  • Informs higher headquarters of aircraft incidents and upon request serves on Accident Investigation Boards, gathering evidence, analyzing causes, and preparing comprehensive reports with recommendations
