Full Job Description




The South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy is seeking a registered nurse (RN) to provide direct nursing care, education, counseling, and supervision of program activity in specialized areas for both students and the staff at the Criminal Justice Academy.

Duties include:
  • Manages the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Program to include the development of CJA's Bloodborne Pathogen Control Plan, annual and new employee training in Bloodborne Pathogen regulations, administration of the Hepatitis B Vaccine to existing and new employees for Disease Control guidelines, and conducts follow-up procedures for Bloodborne Pathogen Post Exposure situations.
  • Renders medical assessment and assistance to injured or sick employees and students during specified hours of sick call; provides non-prescription medications and stores diabetic medication for students and prescription injections; takes and records temperature, pulse, respiration, tests vision and hearing, and takes blood; implements a comprehensive immunization program; and reviews pre-employment medical applications under the ADA guidelines.
  • Conducts health/wellness training programs such as nutrition and weight loss, smoking cessation, stress management, first aid, CPR, prevention and risk factors, early detection of disease, and control of health problems. Performs nurses’ diagnosis.
  • Assist CJA instructors with physical fitness testing for students and staff on selected days. Assists when conducting OC Spray Certification for students.
  • Maintains confidential medical files on medical screening, random drug screening, OSHA bloodborne pathogen exposure, and all student or employee medical information.
  • Records health histories on students and staff, compliant with the HIPAA standards. Makes medical referrals as needed.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures for signature approval by the physician preceptor as it relates to medical protocols and implementation of an immunization program for employees. Perform other duties as required by the supervisor, deputy director, or director.


Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing

  • Licensure as a RN by the South Carolina Board of Nursing

  • At least six (6) years experience as an RN

  • Experience in occupational health with OSHA knowledge

  • BLS (Basic Life Saving)/AED instructor certification

  • Skills assessment and trauma experience

  • Ability to lift, carry and utilize equipment that weighs in excess of 40 pounds

Additional Information

  • Expertise in counseling and referrals
  • Current instructor certification in BLS, AED, and Standard First Aid procedures with physical ability to teach and certify employees
  • Substantial knowledge of current social-medical issues and OSHA standards
  • Knowledge of current HIPPA standards and implementation in an occupational setting.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, supervisors, and agency partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural, social, and educational backgrounds.
  • Availability to work holidays when classes are in session.
  • Availability for occasional evening or nighttime instruction.
  • Availability to work in inclement conditions.
  • Availability to assist other law enforcement agencies during emergency situations.
