Summary

This job involves running fun activities and programs at a recreation center in Detroit, like sports games, exercise classes, arts and crafts, and outdoor play, while ensuring everything runs safely and smoothly.

Full Job Description

Under general supervision, conducts recreation activities at an assigned center, or in an assigned special phase of recreation work.  Provides information and instruction in recreational games and activities.

Requirements

Assists in promoting recreation center programs and activities. Assists in identifying sponsorship opportunities within the community.

In the absence of the supervisor, represents the department and assumes responsibility for the activities and safety of the recreation center and assigned employees.

Directs and monitors the activities of Playleaders, volunteers, other seasonal employees, and providers. Completes work activity reports. Conducts formal exercise classes and directs free play.

This includes conducting formal exercise classes, directing free play, providing instruction in and officiating basketball, volleyball, and other indoor games, and supervising and instructing participants in arts and crafts, games, and other projects.

Organizes and directs the activities of an outdoor play center. Assists in the direction of indoor and outdoor activities and programs.

Supervises, coordinates and instructs groups at one or more small summer playgrounds, in preparation for special activities. Administers first aid.

Qualifications Bachelor's degree in recreation, physical education, or sports and athletics. One year of professional recreation experience.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be substituted to meet the education and experience requirement of this position.Licensing and CertificationsIndividuals entering this class are required to complete a training course in basic first aid and CPR to attain permanent status in this class.

Valid State of Michigan Operator License. Employees in this class may be required to provide and operate a motor vehicle on a reimbursed mileage basis.

Candidates considered for placement in this classification may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation based on the requirements of the position.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKNOWLEDGE OF:Rules, regulations and procedures of a recreation center.

    • Organize, instruct and lead groups in various forms of directed recreational activities.
    • Oversee and monitor recreation programs and activities.
    • Prepare activity reports.
    • Demonstrate resourcefulness and initiative in promoting recreation programs and activities.
    • Operate a personal computer utilizing word processing and other related software.
    • Communicate effectively in writing.
    Work is performed within a recreation center or municipal park including playgrounds, swimming pools, gymnasiums and other city facilities and outside areas. Work is performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to all seasonal conditions.

    This job may involve lifting tables, chairs and other objects needed to properly execute the event. It also involves participating in games and activities with children, adults, and groups. The intensity level of activity can vary from low to high depending on activity.
