Job Description

Summary

This job involves helping manage daily operations at Port Crescent State Park, including overseeing staff, maintaining facilities, and ensuring visitors enjoy recreational activities while protecting the natural environment.

A good fit would be someone with hands-on experience in parks or outdoor recreation who enjoys leading teams, building community relationships, and handling both people and resource conservation tasks.

Key Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Four years of park and recreation experience, including one year equivalent to Park and Recreation Ranger 9 or two years equivalent to Ranger E8
  • Valid Michigan driver's license
  • Ability to monitor and evaluate staff performance
  • Knowledge of administrative policies, budget management, and compliance
  • Experience in facility maintenance, construction, and safety enforcement
  • Optional: Certification by DNR Park and Recreation Enforcement Commission or Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

This position serves as an assistant supervisor to a Park and Recreation Supervisor 12 with Port Crescent State Park & Port Austin State Harbor. The purpose of this position is to provide high quality recreational opportunities to the public, while preserving and balancing the protection of the natural resources. Duties include assisting in the direction of daily program operations and day-to-day objectives. Monitors, evaluates, and addresses staff performance. Ensures compliance with administrative policies and procedures and expenditures are within the allotted budget. Coordinates, and participates in the maintenance and/or construction of facilities. Build and maintain relationships with other divisions and external stakeholders. Coordinates enforcement and safety of work area.

Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school.

Experience
Park And Recreation Supervisor 10
Four years of park and recreation experience, including one year equivalent to a Park and Recreation Ranger 9 or two years equivalent to a Park and Recreation Ranger E8.

Qualifications

Alternate Education and Experience

Park And Recreation Supervisor 10

Completion of at least 8 semester or 12 term college credit hours in natural resources, park management, outdoor recreation, law enforcement/criminal justice, or environmental studies may be substituted for one year of experience as a Park and Recreation Ranger-E.

completion of at least 15 semester or 22 term college credit hours in natural resources, park management, outdoor recreation, law enforcement/criminal justice, or environmental studies may be substituted for two years of experience as a Park and Recreation Ranger-E.

Additional Information

Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license.

Some positions may require certification by the Department of Natural Resources’ Park and Recreation Enforcement Commission.

Some positions within this class series are assigned job duties that may require possession of the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) issued by the Secretary of State as required by Public Act 346 of 1988 to operate a designated state vehicle.
