Job Description

Summary

This job is for a lifeguard at the recreational swim facility at West Point, New York, where you'll watch over swimmers in indoor and outdoor pools, enforce safety rules, and respond to emergencies by performing rescues and first aid.

You'll also help with cleaning the pool area, testing water quality, and assisting in swim lessons or training programs.

Key Requirements

  • Possess and maintain Lifeguarding and First Aid certification from American Red Cross or equivalent (e.g., Star Guard, YMCA, or ELLIS)
  • Possess and maintain American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer/AED or equivalent (e.g., American Heart Association CPR/AED)
  • Provide maximum pool surveillance and respond to emergencies, including rescues and first aid
  • Enforce safety rules, warn patrons, and follow disciplinary procedures
  • Assist in aquatic training, swim lessons, and maintaining clean, hazard-free pool areas
  • Perform water tests and maintain daily logs, reports, and records
  • Waterfront Lifeguard Certification (highly preferred for priority consideration)

This position is located at West Point Recreational Swim. Incentives and Bonuses Incentives will not be paid.

A qualified candidate must possess the following: 1. Possess and maintain the following certifications: Lifeguarding and First Aid (American Red Cross or nationally recognized equivalent i.e.

Star Guard, YMCA or ELLIS) American Red Cross Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation for the Professional; CPR for the Professional Rescuer/AED or equivalent (American Heart Association CPR/AED) First Aid These certifications must be reflected on your resume and your certifications must be uploaded at the time of application to be considered eligible for this position.

In addition to the above qualifications, candidates who possess the following qualifications will be considered "Highly Preferred" or "Best Qualified": 1.

Possess a Waterfront Lifeguard Certification The certification must be reflected on your resume and your certification uploaded at the time of application to be considered a highly preferred candidate.

Applicants meeting the Highly Preferred criteria will be referred first to the Selecting Official.

All other applicants will be referred for consideration if the certificate (referral list) is returned with no selection.

Major Duties:

  • Serves as a lifeguard for indoor and outdoor pools and works under the direction of the Installation Aquatics Program Manager. Employs safety rules for the protection of the pool guests. Maintains daily logs, reports and records as required.
  • Responsible for lifeguarding guests in attendance at the assigned aquatics facility. Provides maximum pool area surveillance and responds to emergencies; rescues pool patrons and administers first aid as required.
  • Assists in the conduct of aquatic swimming and water survival training according to TC 21-21 or with American Red Cross swim lessons. Participates in required training (on-the-job training emergency rescue drills, emergency action plan simulations).
  • Assists in maintaining pool and area clean and free from hazards. Performs periodic water tests and reports results to the pool leader on duty. Provides information to swimmers regarding safety/health/admission rules and procedures.
  • Tactfully warns patrons who repeatedly disregard safety rules and follows facility Standard Operating Procedures for disciplinary actions. Assists in coaching or preparing the competitive and non-competitive swimming programs as required.
