As a Radiation Health Physicist, you will support the Radiation Protection Program Supervisor in preparing for and responding to radiological emergencies, helping safeguard communities when it matters most. You will take part in nuclear power plant drills and real-world readiness exercises, while ensuring vital emergency response instruments and equipment are properly maintained, calibrated, and tracked. Requirements

As a Radiation Health Physicist 2, you will bring your expertise to the forefront of public safety by applying state and federal regulations to strengthen radiological emergency planning and response. You will play a key role in reviewing and refining emergency procedures, guiding everything from field response and protective action recommendations to critical administrative functions.

In this dynamic role, you will ensure readiness at every level by coordinating the maintenance and calibration of radiological instruments across response vehicles, keeping essential equipment fully operations. You will also be expected to maintain vital emergency kits, maps, and procedures used in coordination centers and field teams, while testing communication systems, including satellite equipment, P25 radios, and mobile devices, to guarantee seamless connectivity during emergencies.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 3 days per week. You will be required to report 2 days per week to the Environmental Protection Harrisburg Office.

    In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania.

    If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.

  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $67,736 (before taxes).

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year as a Radiation Health Physicist 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • One year of professional experience in the recognition, evaluation, and control of radiation hazards and possession of a certificate of registration issued by the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists; or
  • Certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics; or
  • Two years of professional experience in the recognition, evaluation, and control of radiation hazards and a bachelor's degree in health physics, radiation physics, radiation biology, nuclear physics, or applied health physics; or
  • Two years of professional experience in the recognition, evaluation, and control of radiation hazards and a bachelor's degree with major course work in the physical, biological, or radiological sciences or in nuclear engineering, that includes 20 credits in health physics or radiological sciences; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of an active non-commercial PA Class C driver’s license or equivalent.

Other Requirements:

  • You must possess and maintain a REAL ID or passport for this position. Proof of possession will be needed at the time of a conditional offer of employment.
  • PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
