Full Job Description

The current vacancies are in the Public Works Department.

  • Highway Maintenance
    • To perform road maintenance tasks including mowing, weed whipping, brush cutting and clearing. Assist with placing traffic control and removing traffic control. Use a variety of hand tools and power tools. Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Construction
    • Assist with construction tasks such as installing wooden survey stakes for road project boundaries and assisting construction inspectors. Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Land Survey
    • Assist with land survey tasks in the field and office. Tasks include verifying property boundaries and maintaining the Public Land Survey System markers. Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Engineering and Design
    • Assist Project Managers and engineering staff with tasks related to road and infrastructure design and operation. Assist with research and documentation. Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  1. Perform designated road maintenance duties such as directing traffic around construction areas, shoveling and raking blacktop, cutting grass along roadways and performing related duties. On occasion, may operate designated equipment under the supervision of departmental staff.
  2. Drive county vehicles to work sites within Ramsey County.
  3. Use a variety of hand and power tools such as shovel, pick, broom, weed whip, mowers, leaf blower, and pole saw.
  4. Assist in road patching operations.
  5. Drive pickup truck behind the road striping crew.
  6. Set up traffic control devices and direct traffic as flag person on roadway projects.


(The work assigned to a position in this classification may not include all possible tasks in this description and does not limit the assignment of any additional tasks in this classification. Regular attendance according to the position’s management approved work schedule is required.)

Qualifications

Education: Sufficient to perform the work assigned.

Experience: None.

Substitution: None.

Certifications/Licensure: A valid driver’s license is preferred.

Other: Must be age 18 or older.

This is an unclassified, at-will temporary position. This position requires an open screening and selection process. There is no exam for this unclassified, at-will, temporary position.

Definition of Unclassified from the Ramsey County Personnel Act:

Subdivision 1. General. "The appointing authority may discharge employees in the unclassified service with or without cause.

Employees in the unclassified service have no right to a grievance appeal from discharge or other disciplinary action under sections 383A.281 to 383A.301.

An employee in an unclassified position shall not have tenure but shall be entitled to all benefits associated with tenure such as vacation leave, sick leave, health insurance, and other benefits as determined by the county board."
