Job Description

Summary

This job involves working as a dispatcher in a high-pressure office, where you'll answer 911 calls, figure out what's wrong, and quickly send police, firefighters, or medical help to the scene.

About the Position: This position provides emergency response dispatching of law enforcement, fire and emergency medical services to the public by answering emergency calls and responding with appropriate personnel and equipment.

Specialized Experience GS-7: One year of specialized experience which includes experience experience receiving and evaluating 911 calls; determining problem or nature of call in order to dispatch appropriate emergency personnel and equipment; and providing basic instructions prior to arrival of responders.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/ level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.

For the GS-7 grade level, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Emergency Calls Classifying and Routing Providing Instructions Time in Grade Requirement GS-7: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).

Major Duties:

  • Responsible for the receipt and effective evaluation of 911 emergency calls.
  • Responsible for determining nature of the call. Prioritizes all incoming emergency and non-emergency calls.
  • Identifies the determinant and level of response and provides this and any additional information to the responding units.
  • Provides emergency medical dispatching (EMD) assistance to callers with medical emergencies using the local authority emergency medical dispatch system.
  • Monitors status and availability of police, fire and medical units to assure an appropriate response is made.
  • Maintains reports and retrieves needed statistical information using the fire incident reporting system(s).
