Loudoun County Department of Family Services seeks a dedicated, professional candidate for its Public Benefits Specialist I position. The successful candidate will join the Public Assistance and Support division and the diverse department that envisions better health, safety, and well-being for all. The Department supports individuals and families in the community to live their best lives while advocating for those most vulnerable and respecting their right to self-determination.

Requirements

This entry level position is responsible for determining eligibility for Public Assistance Programs, to include Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and Medicaid Programs by conducting interviews with applicants, requesting appropriate documentation, and applying applicable policy. This position will maintain caseloads and evaluate continued eligibility for those approved for these programs. This position is also responsible for taking timely action on reported changes and completing thorough case documentation.

The ideal candidate should have the following:
  • Knowledge of automated systems related to program area and job role.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, techniques and practices of family, children, and adult public assistance programs.
  • Knowledge of interviewing processes.
  • Skill in conducting interviews to gather pertinent information related to the determination of eligibility for public assistance programs.
  • Knowledge of casework theory and practice.
  • Skill in providing appropriate and effective case management for those applying for or receiving public assistance programs.
  • Skill in communicating, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with clients, co-workers, staff, other professionals, officials, and the public.
  • Ability to understand, interpret and apply policy appropriately in determining eligibility.
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential situations in a professional and discrete manner.
Hiring salary is commensurate with experience.

Qualifications

High school diploma; four (4) years of related experience in a customer service or social service/human services setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • Preferred Public Benefits policy knowledge and experience processing SNAP and Medicaid applications and renewals.

Additional Information

  • This position may be located at our Leesburg or Sterling office and may be assigned and required to work at an alternate work site(s) to carry out duties that support the needs of the County.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment background checks which may include criminal, credit, and DMV. This position may require CPS check depending on program area. Valid driver’s license and good driving record (driving records may be reviewed annually for continued qualification.
