Job Description

Summary

This job involves supervising low-risk individuals on probation or pretrial release, helping them build better behaviors to avoid reoffending and successfully return to society.

You'll work closely with clients through regular meetings, document their progress in a database, and use techniques like motivational interviewing to encourage positive changes.

Key Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree in any field
  • A total of two years of education and/or full-time experience in human services or criminal justice (30 semester hours equals one year of experience)
  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch with 18 months as a full-time Residential Officer
  • Strong communication skills and ability to build relationships with clients
  • Proficiency in motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral strategies
  • Attention to detail for documenting caseload management in electronic databases like ICON
  • Integrity, ethical conduct, and ability to work independently in a team setting

If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to become a key player in preparing clients for successful reentry into society as a Probation Parole Officer 1 at the Iowa Department of Corrections.


As a Probation Parole Officer 1 you will be a direct service provider, engaging in high-contact interactions with clients. You will play an essential role in eliciting and supporting pro-social behaviors, with a focus on programming that fosters personal growth and reduces the risk of reoffending.

Your responsibilities will encompass a diverse range of tasks from supervision of person’s who are low risk, pretrial or on a banked caseload.

Duties may include documenting information with respect to caseload management into our electronic database (ICON) according to performance standards, writing presentence reports and issuing bond reduction recommendations.

You'll be trained to employ effective behavior change techniques, such as motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral strategies, to facilitate lasting transformation.
