Job Description

Summary

This job involves repairing and maintaining a wide range of vehicles and equipment, from cars and trucks to construction machinery, by diagnosing problems, fixing parts, and performing routine checks.

A good fit would be someone with hands-on mechanical experience who enjoys troubleshooting engines and systems, and is comfortable working independently or leading helpers in a busy public works setting.

Key Requirements

  • Completion of a four-year apprenticeship in automotive equipment repair, or a two-year program from an accredited community college or vocational school in automotive/heavy-duty repair, or five years of relevant repair experience including one year at journey level
  • Valid California Class C Driver License (Class A or B may be required for some positions)
  • Ability to diagnose and repair defects in gasoline, diesel, hybrid, and alternative fuel engines, transmissions, brakes, and electrical systems
  • Experience road testing vehicles and construction equipment
  • Proficiency using computers to access equipment data and record work
  • Skills in performing preventive maintenance, inspections, and recommending repairs
  • Ability to supervise helpers as assigned

Requirements

A Power Equipment Technician is responsible for performing a combination of the following essential job functions:

Repairs passenger cars, light, medium and heavy-duty trucks and construction equipment as well as a variety of non-automotive power equipment.Diagnoses defects and overhauls major automotive components such as gasoline, alternative fuel vehicles, hybrids, and diesel engines, clutches, transmissions, brakes, front and rear axles, fuel, cooling and electrical systems.Replaces or repairs worn or broken parts of equipment and installs accessories.Road tests various types of automotive, light medium and heavy-duty trucks, and construction equipment.Uses computers to access equipment information and store work records.Inspects automotive equipment to determine cause of malfunction.Performs preventive maintenance services and inspections on equipment and makes recommendations for vehicle repairs.

Supervises helpers as assigned.

Qualifications MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSOPTION I - Completion of a recognized four-year apprentice-training program* in automotive equipment repair**-OR-OPTION II - Completion of an automotive or heavy-duty, off-road repair program from an accredited community college or vocational school of at least two years duration**-OR- OPTION III - Five years of experience in automotive or heavy duty, diesel engine, off-road equipment repair, one year of which must have been at the journey level***.*A recognized training program training program such as vocational schools, trade schools and community colleges.*** Journey-level staff are assigned the full-range and diversity of work and may operate with fairly significant freedom from day-to-day supervision and need little or no guidance on such matters as selecting appropriate problem-solving methods and techniques, locating appropriate regulations, or applying proper procedures to carry out work.LICENSEA valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.

A valid California Class A or B Driver License may be required for some positions in this class.PHYSICAL CLASSPhysical Class IV – Arduous: Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces; and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity.SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:Applicants must either upload California Driver's License as attachment at time of filing or e-mail document as an attachment to SAltamirano@dpw.lacounty.gov within five (5) business days from filing.Applications submitted without the required documents will be rejected as incomplete.

**Applicants expecting to qualify under completion of a recognized four-year apprentice-training program in automotive equipment repair or completion of an automotive or heavy duty, off-road repair program from an accredited community college or vocational school of at least two years duration MUST attach a copy of the certificate confirming successful completion of the required training at time of filing.

If you are unable to attach required documents, you must email them to SAltamirano@dpw.lacounty.gov within five (5) business days of filing for open continuous exams.License Information: The County is required to comply with the Federal regulations which require pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to work, follow up and random urine drug and breath alcohol testing of employees who carry commercial driver licenses and who are assigned to drive certain vehicles.Successful applicants for positions that require driving must obtain and present a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment.

Applicants should not present a copy of their driving history until asked to do so by the hiring department.

The County will make an individualized assessment of whether an applicant’s driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job.

License must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.

    MULTIPLE CHOICE AND/OR SIMULATION ASSESSMENT(S) ARE NOT REVIEWABLE BY CANDIDATES PER CIVIL SERVICE RULE 7.19.


    APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON THE COMBINED EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.

    ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION
    The names of candidates receiving a passing grade in the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

    Applications will be processed on an as-received basis and promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

    No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.
