Under general supervision, performs journey-level work in the installation, alteration and repair of water, heating and drainage systems in buildings, pump stations, structures and facilities in accordance with the California Plumbing Code of Regulations Title 24 Part 5; lays out work according to job orders, blueprints, specifications, rough sketches and/or from technical experience and judgment; assembles, installs and repairs pipes, fittings and fixtures for water and waste disposal systems and gas, steam, air and water heating systems; connects water and gas heaters, furnaces, appliances and other fixtures; inspects and tests systems for malfunction and determines extent and estimated cost of necessary repairs; replaces or repairs valves and other fixtures; observes safety rules; keeps simple records and makes reports; and performs other related duties as required.
Option A: Five (5) years of paid full-time equivalent experience as a plumber or related experience, one (1) year which must have been at a journey-level.
OR
Option B: Five (5) years experience with the City of Long Beach performing plumbing related duties.
OR
Option C: A valid State of California Plumbing Contractor's License/C-36 (proof required)*
*Proof of required documents, such as degree or transcripts, must be uploaded to the online application at the time of filing.
Any proofs submitted must contain either the applicant's name or other identifying characteristics on the form.
Degrees must indicate the field of study and transcripts must indicate a field of study and degree conferred date.
Candidates who possess degrees from colleges or universities outside the United States must attach proof of educational equivalence at the time of filing.
A valid driver's license will be required by the hiring department at the time of the selection.
Willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays, special events, standby and emergency duty as required.
A Los Angeles County Backflow Prevention Device Inspection Certificate and/or a Water Distribution Operator (D-2) Certificate are required for some positions in this classification.
Applicants who receive an appointment to a position requiring these certificates must successfully complete an approved training course and obtain the required certificate prior to completion of the probationary period.
Applicants who receive an appointment may be required to attend training for the proper procedures for the handling of asbestos and lead.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Class A or B driver's license; National Inspection Testing Certification (NITC); Water Distribution Operator (D-2) Certificate.

Screening of applicants will be conducted on the basis of application and required supplemental application submitted.
Only those candidates showing the strongest backgrounds on the basis of comparative analysis will be invited to the examination process.
Based on the number of applications accepted, the selection procedure may be changed. In the event a revision is necessary, the affected persons will be notified.
In accordance with Civil Service Procedure 3.38, all eligible veterans that successfully qualify on any or all open-competitive examinations shall receive an additional credit of ten (10) points that will be added to their original passing score.
Disabled veterans passing the examination shall receive a credit of fifteen (15) points that will be added to their original passing score.
(A copy of the veterans DD-214, Member 4 form indicating honorable discharge must be attached to the application at the time of filing.)
