Work Schedule: Monday- Friday, 7 am -3:30 pm. Work schedule may be adjusted following the probationary period based on supervisory discretion and operational needs.

Position Summary:

The City of Portland is seeking a skilled and dedicated Plumber to join our team.

This position involves the installation, maintenance, and repair of pipes, fittings, fixtures, and other plumbing equipment used for water distribution in various settings including, commercial, institutional, and industrial buildings.

The ideal candidate will be proficient in repairing fixtures by repacking, reseating, or repairing valves, cutting and threading pipe, bending pipe, flaring and brazing copper tubing, testing valves, and other equipment.

Additional responsibilities include using jetting equipment, unclogging sewer lines and other plumbing piping systems, reading and interpreting blueprints and written instructions, and coordinating with supervisors on construction, alteration, maintenance, and repair projects.

The position will require working alone during the work week and responding immediately to situations that involve unexpected leaks, broken pipes, and shutdown of equipment connected to piping systems.


As a Plumber, you will:

  • Install, maintain, and repair plumbing systems in commercial, institutional, and industrial buildings.
  • Repair fixtures by repacking, reseating, or repairing valves, cutting and threading pipe, bending pipe, flaring, and brazing copper tubing.
  • Test valves and other equipment, using jetting equipment, unclog sewer lines and pipes.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and written instructions.
  • Coordinate with supervisors on construction, alteration, maintenance, and repair projects.
  • Submit material and time estimates for various projects.
  • Utilize plumbing tools and equipment such as manual and power pipe cutting and threading machines, sewer cleaners, propane torches, and hand tools, including drill motors, saws, chain pipe (snap) cutters, pipe, basin, strap, and torque wrenches.
  • Clean, maintain, and repair power and hand tools.
  • Maintain records, supplies, and equipment; determine materials needed; and follow all required safety procedures.

Requirements

The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:
  1. Experience using plumbing tools, materials, techniques, and processes, including water supply layouts, waste, venting, and other piping systems.
  2. Knowledge of state laws, city codes, and regulations related to sanitation and public health in plumbing work.
  3. Ability to learn and follow safe working practices and maintain accurate records.
  4. Ability to read blueprints, drawings, and specifications, and to install, repair, and maintain plumbing fixtures in various settings (domestic, commercial, industrial).
  5. Experience reading and interpreting blueprints, using plumbing tools, and measuring, cutting, bending, threading, and brazing pipes.

  • Experience working with industrial water, steam, and gas.
