This job involves hands-on work installing, repairing, and maintaining plumbing and heating systems for the City of Jacksonville's Public Works Department, including tasks like fixing leaks, installing fixtures, and ensuring safety in buildings.

Repairs plumbing and heating equipment.Prepares sketches for new plumbing and heating systems.Installs new plumbing equipment.Tests joints and pipe systems for leaksInstalls plumbing and sanitary fixtures.Repairs air, water, and waste disposal systems.Cuts openings in walls for pipes.Replaces washers on leaky faucets.Ensures that appropriate permitting is obtained for new installations.Checks, repairs, and replaces high- and low-pressure steam boilers.Checks safety devices and controls.Flushes and cleans boilers, storage and return tanks, and hot water heaters.Prepares estimates of time and materials.Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville’s competencies.Performs related work as required.
Qualifications Knowledge of techniques, methods, and procedures used in plumbing and heating.Knowledge of equipment, materials and tools used in plumbing and heating.Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.Skill in the use and care of materials, tools, and equipment used in plumbing and heating.Ability to prepare estimates of time and materials.Ability to work from sketches and blueprints.Ability to read and apply job related materials.Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
Additional Information Four (4) years of education and/or experience in plumbing.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
Must possess a Certificate of Competency as a Journeyman or Master Plumber issued by the City of Jacksonville and/or comparable State of Florida license and must maintain the same during employment in this class.
A valid driver’s license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.
Must qualify for prior to appointment, obtain and maintain during employment a City of Jacksonville Certification as a Public Driver.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
The probationary period for this class is six (6) months.
Depending upon assignment, must pass the Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) background screening performed by the Jacksonville Sherriff’s Office prior to appointment.
If assigned to JSO, this includes a polygraph.
Within thirty (30) days of appointment date to classification, acquire and maintain the appropriate level of Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) certification which corresponds to the job responsibilities.
The level will be determined by current CJIS guidelines and may change periodically.
Certification is obtained by successfully completing a web-based training course and test which covers physical security, incident response, the protection of information and other IT specific security threats, vulnerabilities, and risks.
Depending upon assignment, may be required to obtain specialized certifications.
This position performs safety-sensitive functions and is subject to pre-employment, random and other drug/alcohol testing programs as set forth in the City of Jacksonville’s Drug Free Workplace Policy (0401).
