This seasonal summer job involves leading fun activities and games for kids aged 3 to 12 at a Detroit recreation center, ensuring everyone stays safe and engaged during day camp hours.

Key Requirements

  • Availability for varying shifts between 8AM-8:30PM

Full Job Description

Under general supervision, as a seasonal worker, organizes and directs recreational activities or assists in directing such activities during Summer Day Camp programming at a recreation center.

Day Camp Counselors will be working daily with children 3 to 12 and should have an interest in working with youth at our recreation center and will be expected to assist with other duties as assigned.

Available shift times: 8AM - 4:30PM, 10AM - 6:30PM, 12PM - 8:30PM

Shifts will vary depending on the staffing needs at each individual center

Requirements

  • Create a welcoming and safe environment.
  • Organizes and directs free-play and planned group activities at a recreation site or facility.
  • Communicate program information, expectations and rules to community members, participants and team members. If needed direct questions or concerns to appropriate people/supervisors.
  • Ensure that equipment and apparatus are safe and properly used and deter inappropriate behavior.
  • Assists in managing participant behavior and disruptions in a professional manner.
  • Chaperone filed trips to area attractions as part of the Day Camp program or Recreation Activities.
  • Encourages participation in activities.
  • Administers first aid when needed.
  • Interprets rules of games, when required.
  • Attend staff meetings.
  • Maintains simple records and makes reports on activities.
  • Assists professional recreation personnel in conducting programs and activities.
  • Set up and break down activities and events which includes moving tables and chairs and other equipment.
  • Assist with meal service to children and seniors as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Graduation or G.E.D 
  • One (1) year of experience in conducting organized recreational activities or in some athletic or related activity.
