Job Description
Summary
This job involves driving a tow truck to pick up and transport vehicles that are broken down, illegally parked, impounded, or needed as evidence for the Detroit Police Department, while also handling equipment and paperwork at scenes.
It requires working closely with police officers and dispatch, performing safety checks, and making minor repairs.
A good fit would be someone reliable with hands-on experience in heavy vehicle operation, who stays calm under pressure and follows rules carefully.
Key Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- Two years of experience operating special purpose vehicles and equipment
- Valid Michigan Commercial Driver's License (Group B with Air Brake Endorsement or Group A)
- Current Medical Examiner’s Certificate for physical fitness to drive
- Knowledge of traffic rules, regulations, and vehicle safety procedures
- Skills in using recovery tools like snatch blocks and skates, plus minor mechanical repairs
- Ability to communicate effectively with police, dispatch, and the public, including passing a criminal background check and social media review

- Use specialized equipment to recover vehicles (snatch blocks, skates, etc.)
- Move vehicles within the impound lots
- Pre/Post trip inspections
- Vehicle Recovery
- Adhere to safety regulations
- Complete paperwork and manage assigned radio to communicate with dispatch
- Communicate with DPD Officers at the scene

- Two (2) years’ of experience in the operation of special purpose vehicles and equipment.
- Knowledge of operating and minor maintenance of special purpose vehicles and equipment.
- Knowledge of traffic rules and regulations.
- Skill in operating special purpose vehicles and equipment and associated auxiliary equipment.
- Ability to perform mechanical work, including minor emergency repairs to equipment.
- Ability to interact effectively with other employees and the public.
- Valid State of Michigan Commercial Driver License with Group B Designation and Air Brake Endorsement or Group A.
- A current valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate certifying physical fitness for driving in accordance with State of Michigan Motor Carrier safety Act of 1998.
- Candidates considered for placement in this classification may be subject to a Criminal Background Investigation based on the requirements of the position.
