This job involves installing, maintaining, and repairing complex electrical systems and controls in water and wastewater treatment plants or pump stations, including programming computers that manage plant operations.
It also includes troubleshooting problems, training junior staff, and leading teams on tough tasks.
A good fit would be an experienced electrician with hands-on work in industrial settings like treatment plants, who enjoys technical challenges and can handle irregular hours.

Plant Process Control Electrician positions install, test, adjust, modify and maintain the most complex motor control and power systems, electrical machinery and equipment in a water treatment plant, wastewater treatment plant, water pump station, wastewater pump station and/or storm water pump station; design, modify and make programming and software improvements on computerized electrical system control and data acquisition operations; analyze problems and make necessary repairs on electrical control systems required to interface with process control computers; instruct Electricians in the more difficult and complex aspects of their work assignments; may lead the work of lower level staff; and perform other duties as assigned.
Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
Plant Process Control Electrician employees who operate commercial vehicles are required by California State Law, as a condition of employment, to submit to drug and alcohol testing.
Prior to hire, a background check will be completed in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse and with former employers regarding drug and alcohol testing results.
City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours.
OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.
