Base salary range: $147,649 - $221,900

Note: Actual salary includes locality pay (15-40%+ depending on location).
This job involves leading a team that handles animal adoptions, rescues, and fostering in a city animal shelter, while building partnerships with other organizations to improve animal welfare outcomes.
It requires managing daily operations, staying calm in stressful situations, and working closely with the public and staff to promote live releases and prevent overcrowding.
A good fit would be someone passionate about animals with strong leadership skills and experience in team management and community collaboration.
This position is responsible for the administrative direction, planning, managing, and administering the programs and activities of kennel and adoption services for ACS.
Incumbent in this position will coordinate the assigned activities with other city and county agencies and divisions.
Incumbent will provide highly responsible and complex administrative support to the Administrator including assisting the Administrator in refinement and implementation of a strategic plan for the promotion of animal care.
The incumbent in this position must utilize independent judgment in different areas of the division.
The incumbent's other actions are dictated by established policies and procedures, civil and criminal laws, and the codes established by the city and county.
The incumbent in this position will be on call 24-hours a day all year. Position reports to the Administrator Operations.Agency Summary

The agency does this by protecting and promoting the health, safety, and welfare of pets and livestock in Marion County.

Manage Shelter Placement staff, including the IACS Adoption Coordinator and Adoption Services staff, the Rescue Coordinator, the Foster Coordinator, the Indy C.A.R.E.S team.
At the direction of the Administrator: Policy & Planning and Deputy Director of IACS, implement strategic initiatives aimed at improving placement and diversion efforts.
Maintain partnerships with local animal welfare organizations and the broader animal welfare community.
Research and partner with local and regional municipal and non-profit shelters to understand best practices and new industry trends.
Encourage collaboration among the placement team to improve and maintain positive live release rates and animal diversion numbers.
Partner with DBNS/IACS Communications staff to strengthen outreach efforts, including access to applicable social media accounts.
Partner with AFSCME representatives to work collaboratively through ideas and issues Assist with operational needs applicable to the placement team, including managing scheduled cash deposit pick-ups.
Qualifications Five (5) years of relevant experience.
Must be able to effectively respond to calls for services; recognize normal and abnormal animal behavior; manage potentially dangerous animals in a safe manner; respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
Must have an ability to remain calm and effective during a crisis event in an emotionally charged environment. Must be compassionate in all areas of the animal welfare.
Must have proven management skills with the ability to motivate and manage a diverse group of team members. Must be comfortable being around and interacting with animals of all sizes and breeds.
Must understand operational characteristics and services of animal programs, principles of animal behavior and care, identification of a variety of breeds of animals, methods and techniques of animal collection, impoundment, and registration.
Must adhere to state and local laws, codes, regulations, and occupational hazards.
Must have great communications skills both orally and written and be able to adapt to different tones and messaging to meet the needs of different audiences in different settings.
Must be able to work under extremely stressful conditions. Must exhibit tact in collaborating with other professionals and team members. Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Preferred Job Requirements and QualificationsBachelor’s Degree in Communications or related field. Five (5) years direct experience
