About the Position: The Parks Maintenance Crew Chief work is concerned with maintaining developed parks and natural areas used by the community at-large for passive and active recreation and acting as a point of contact for the public.

This position develops community partnerships, alliances, and sponsorships to further the maintenance, safety, utilization, and physical site improvements of these park lands.

The Parks Maintenance Crew Chief is responsible for a geographic maintenance district. The staff supervised include multiple job titles and unions.

The work responsibilities described below are accomplished through delegation to Senior staff, coordination with a variety of other work units in Parks and Recreation, other public agencies, and ongoing interaction with the community.

Requirements

  • Develop, implement, and administer district work plan and vegetation management plans. Prepare recommendations and justifications for the district's annual budget including salaries, supplies, services, utilities, and equipment, as well as monitoring budgeted expenditures.
  • Assist management in developing a grounds maintenance program, and related policies and procedures.

    Train staff in arboriculture, horticulture, and resource conservation techniques and safety procedures; establish sustainable work standards; inspect and evaluate staff's work.

    Maintain personnel and technical records, and complete employee performance evaluations.

  • Review design drawings and project specifications for contracted work and in-house projects; provides coordination with other departments, utilities and businesses as required.
  • Requisition equipment and supplies; maintain related inventories; assist in preparing specifications for new equipment, vehicles, out-buildings and materials; assess future needs.
  • Represent the Department in public meetings, work with community groups, coordinate trails and athletic field maintenance activities and landscape redevelopment and habitat improvement activities with user groups, Volunteer Programs Coordinator, and park naturalists.

    Promote good relationships with the public and user groups.

  • Investigate and respond to citizen inquiries and complaints based on policy, and Best Management Practices for horticulture, arboriculture, and Integrated Pest Management.
  • Supervise the application and storage of fertilizers, pesticides and other toxic substances, and plans, directs and performs the maintenance and repair of turf and landscaped areas, athletic fields, building facilities and natural areas.
  • Act as subject matter expert in ensuring building standards are adhered to and project designs are maintained within current best management practices for maintenance, public safety, and public enjoyment.
  • Prepare personnel and equipment records. Prepare field and weekly reports using computer software.
  • Perform other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
Requires four years of parks, grounds or landscape maintenance experience which includes two years of lead responsibilities; and requires the ability to supervise others (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).

The following qualifications will be highly valued:
  • Basic understanding of a central controlled irrigation system, green stormwater infrastructure, drainage, ecologically sound turf care, wildlife habitat management, Integrate Pest Management (IPM), horticulture and arboriculture.
  • Demonstrate excellent organizational skills and the ability to communicate facts and ideas clearly both orally and in writing.
  • Skilled in the proper uses of PC software, including Word and Excel, Outlook and AMWO work tracking software.
  • Experience handling a budget and developing and administering work plans.
  • Be able to convey experiences and mission to a diverse team of staff and have the ability to deal effectively with personnel issues.
  • Have strong customer-service skills, the ability to work in a courteous, tactful, and professional manner with customers who exhibit stress, and the demonstrated ability to work in a team setting with cross functional – composite work teams.
  • Deals with corrective feedback in a manner that inspires accountability and builds credibility with peers and supervisors.
  • Creates and maintains an environment of trust and respect between self and team members
  • Initiates procedures, programs, or policies to foster racial equity and inclusion in everyday work.

License, Certification, and Other Requirements:
  • Current, valid Driver's License or evidence of equivalent mobility.
  • A current First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • Washington Public Pesticide Operator's License required within 6 months of employment.
  • Confined Space Training may be required in some assignments as well as a Commercial Driver's Licenses for Supervisors.
  • An ability to work within a Windows-based environment, using a variety of software to include Outlook (e-mail). MS Word & Excel applications.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:
  • Occasionally required to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Required to work outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Occasionally requires handling or working with toxic/hazardous substances.
