Job Description

Summary

This job involves working as a ranger at Orchard Beach State Park, where you'll help manage daily operations, maintain facilities and grounds, enforce rules, and ensure safety for visitors and staff.

You'll assist with administrative tasks, train others, and handle equipment under minimal supervision.

It's a good fit for someone who enjoys outdoor work, has experience in parks or maintenance, and is physically fit with an interest in law enforcement.

Key Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education
  • DNR Law Enforcement Commission required
  • Attendance at Parks and Recreation Division Law Enforcement Academy and Ranger Operations Academy (12 weeks total, with overnight stays)
  • Obtain medical examiner’s certificate (medical card) within 60 days of hire per Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations
  • Ability to operate vehicles and equipment with GVWR/GCWR between 10,001 and 26,000 pounds
  • For Ranger 6: No specific experience required; for Ranger 7: One year in park/recreation or construction trades; for E8: Two years park/recreation experience including one year at Ranger 7 level
  • Meet physical requirements for commissioned law enforcement (per linked document)
  • 8-15 semester credits in natural resources, park management, or outdoor recreation may substitute for experience

Department of Natural Resources Banner

This position participates in the day to day work activities of the unit with regard to the operations of Parks and Recreation Division administered facilities.

The employee shall assist the Unit Supervisor/Lead Ranger in various administrative tasks as delegated with minimal supervision.

The employee shall perform various types of operational and maintenance duties consistent with the operation of Parks and Recreation Division administered facilities.

This position will train and provide guidance to staff, maintain grounds, infrastructure and equipment, and perform other duties as assigned.

The employee shall regard their personal safety, as well as the safety of co-workers and the public, as their personal responsibility.

This position requires that the employee hold a DNR Law Enforcement Commission.

As a requirement for this position, attendance at the Parks and Recreation Division Law Enforcement Academy and Ranger Operations Academy is required.

These are two separate trainings typically totaling 12 weeks with courses intended to increase your physical ability to handle incidents, increase your knowledge of Parks & Recreation Rules as well as park operations.

These trainings will require overnight stays in / at a learning facility.


This position is required to obtain a medical examiner’s certificate (medical card) in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations within 60-days of hire. This position is required to operate, transport and maintain various pieces of equipment or vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating (GCWR), up to and including, over 10,000lbs and under 26,001 pounds.

Park and Recreation Ranger 7
One year of experience in a park or recreation setting, or in the construction trades.

Park and Recreation Ranger E8
Two years of park and recreation experience, including one year equivalent to a Park and Recreation Ranger 7.

Qualifications

Completion of at least 8 semester (12 term) college credits in natural resources, park management or outdoor recreation may be substituted for one year of experience as a Park and Recreation Ranger-E.

Completion of at least 15 semester (22 term) college credits in natural resources, park management or outdoor recreation may be substituted for two years of experience as a Park and Recreation Ranger-E.

Additional Information
