Job Description

Summary

This Park Ranger II position at Barnwell State Park involves helping run the daily operations of the park, maintaining facilities and grounds, providing excellent customer service to visitors, and educating them about the area's natural and cultural features.

It also includes stepping in for the park manager when needed and living on-site for security and quick response to issues.

A good fit would be someone who enjoys outdoor work, has experience in parks or similar settings, and is comfortable with physical tasks and irregular hours including weekends and holidays.

Full Job Description

Barnwell State Park is a community favorite among the residents of Blackville, South Carolina. One of 16 state parks built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, Barnwell is best known for its great fishing spots. Three small lakes host a large population of crappie, bream, bass and catfish.

Job Purpose and Duties:

Under general supervision, assists with overall operation and maintenance of a State Park. Performs diversified duties as governed by general instruction, policies and standard operating procedures of the Department. Assumes the responsibilities of the Park Manager in the absence of higher-level employees.

1) Assists with park administrative duties in accordance with Department guidelines and procedures and planning of long and short-term goals.
2) Manages assigned specific operations to include public use areas, retail operations, reservations and facilities.
3) Interprets the cultural and natural resources of the State Park Service to park visitors.
4) Customer Service- Work to accomplish the mission of the park service through the core values of Stewardship and Service. Effectively deliver quality customer service and address visitor concerns in a timely manner. Work to ensure that visitors leave with a positive experience and a desire to return.
5) Instruct supervise and perform routine and preventive maintenance on grounds, buildings and equipment to meet established standards. Maintains a safe work environment.
6) Employee will be required to live in designated park housing to provide for security, safety and emergency response.
7) Practice and promote teamwork within the State Park Service, throughout the agency and with external agency stakeholders. Represents office as an active member on agency teams assigned throughout the year.

Requirements

Associate degree in Park Management or related field with one (1) year of park ranger experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Requirements:

1) Position requires medium to heavy lifting, walking, and standing on uneven terrain, crawling, and walking at heights. Exposure to weather conditions, cleaning agents and other material used in maintaining park facilities and grounds. Ability to work a flexible work schedule, including weekends, nights, and holidays. Position requires residency in agency provided housing.
2) Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
3) Must possess a valid South Carolina Driver's License.

Actual Job Location: Barnwell State Park

Full-time, 40 hours per week rotating schedule including weekends and holidays.
