Key Requirements

  • Two years of full-time experience as a Park Maintenance Supervisor, Golf Course Superintendent, or Park Ranger II (Limited Peace Officer) or Park Ranger II in Sacramento County service
  • Or three years of full-time experience as a Senior Park Maintenance Worker in Sacramento County service
  • Or three years of full-time paid experience supervising staff in park maintenance and operations or natural resources
  • Knowledge of park operations, maintenance, administration, supervision, personnel management, and public relations
  • Ability to plan, direct, and manage maintenance staff, prepare and administer budgets, and resolve public complaints
  • Familiarity with safety principles, fire prevention, budgeting, and methods for construction, repair, and care of park facilities and equipment
  • Proficiency in reading blueprints, preparing bid specifications, and coordinating with interdepartmental and external agencies

Under direction, Park Maintenance Superintendents prepare and administer park unit budgets; resolve complaints from the public; are responsible for public promotion of their assigned units; are responsible for administration of contracts, leases, and agreements as well as revenue generating programs; are responsible for the overall implementation and effectiveness of assigned maintenance and operation programs; and coordinate maintenance activities interdepartmentally, intradepartmentally, and with other governmental and public agencies and private agencies, whereas Park Maintenance Supervisors receive direction and assist a section head with these activities.

Requirements

Knowledge of
  • The principles, methods, and techniques of park operations, maintenance and administration
  • The principles and techniques of supervision and training
  • The principles and techniques of personnel management and public relations
  • The methods, materials, tools and equipment used in construction, maintenance and repair of park facilities
  • Safety principles and practices
  • Fire prevention rules and regulations
  • Methods of planning and scheduling time, labor and materials; budgeting processes
  • Maintenance, use and care of park equipment, irrigation systems and landscaped areas

Ability to
  • Plan, direct, and manage the activities of maintenance staff of a major organizational unit
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, County department, and other agencies and organizations
  • Prepare and administer budgets
  • Keep records and write clear and concise reports
  • Analyze situations accurately and develop, recommend and execute an effective course of action
  • Analyze operating procedures and recommend improved programs for administering the maintenance and operation program
  • Evaluate services performed and cost for services, equipment and supplies obtained through outside contractors
  • Evaluate facilities for adequacy of maintenance and operations and implement improvements
  • Read and interpret blueprints, plans and drawings
  • Select and recommend purchase of materials and equipment
  • Prepare specifications for bid
  • Read, write and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Either: Two years of full-time experience performing the duties of a Park Maintenance Supervisor, Golf Course Superintendent or Park Ranger II
(Limited Peace Officer) or Park Ranger II in Sacramento County service, or three years of full-time experience performing the duties of Senior Park Maintenance Worker in Sacramento County service.


Or


Three years of full-time paid experience which included responsibility for supervising the activities of a staff of subordinates in park maintenance and operation or natural resources management in a park or recreation resources agency.


Note: If the word “experience” is referenced in the minimum qualifications, it means full-time paid experience unless the minimum qualification states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Part-time paid experience may be accumulated and pro-rated to meet the total experience requirements.


Special Requirements

License Required: All classes in this series require possession of or ability to obtain a valid California Driver License, Class 3 or higher, before date of appointment.

Ability to obtain a Class 1 or 2 California Drivers License may be required of some jobs.

Certificate Required: All persons appointed to positions in the class of Park Maintenance Supervisor must possess or obtain, within one year of the date of appointment, a State of California Commercial Applicator Certificate. Failure to obtain and/or maintain such certificate may be cause for disciplinary action in accordance with Civil Service Rules.

Some Senior Park Maintenance Worker positions may require a State of California Commercial Applicator Certificate. Failure to obtain and/or maintain such certificate when required may be cause for disciplinary action in accordance with Civil Service Rules.

Age Requirement: Applicants must be eighteen years of age prior to appointment because of the hazards of the job, as defined by the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Working Conditions: Incumbents in these classes must be willing to work on weekends, evenings and holidays, to work outdoors in all kinds of weather, and to work at various locations throughout the County.


Probationary Period

The probationary period for this classification is six (6) months.

    FORMULA RATE EXAMINATION (Weighted 100%)


    All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications by the cut-off date will have their Supplemental Questionnaire scored in the Formula Rate Examination.


    This examination will evaluate the relevance, level, recency, progression and quality of candidate's education, training and experience.

    The candidate's application or other materials will not be included in this examination.

    Therefore, the candidate's responses to the supplemental questionnaire should be thorough, detailed and complete.

    The score from the Formula Rate Examination will determine the ranking on the eligible/employment list for this job.


    All candidates competing in the testing process will receive written notice of their examination results by email. Notices can also be accessed in their governmentjobs.com inbox.

    Applicants achieving a passing score will be placed on the eligible list in rank order. The rank is determined by the test score attained from the examination.
