Full Job Description

This is a non-merit position. Candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section. Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.



Orientation and Mobility Specialist- Grant Wood AEA

Primary Function:

  • In collaboration with Area Education Agencies (AEAs) and Local Education Agencies (LEAs), and using an itinerant model, the Orientation and Mobility Specialist provide direct and consultative orientation and mobility services to students with visual impairments, in their local school and home settings.
  • Formulates appropriate educational objectives, activities, evaluation, goals, and instruction.
  • Reports student growth and programs to parents periodically.
  • Participates as a member of multidisciplinary teams; involved with evaluations; educational planning.


Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in orientation and mobility plus experience using a computer and other office equipment required.

Candidates must meet State of Iowa orientation and mobility specialist licensure requirements by the time of appointment.

The ability to travel throughout a designated region within Iowa on a daily basis is also required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in orientation and mobility and experience with school-age children preferred.

Position Details:

Full-time, School-year appointment. Service region covers multiple Iowa School districts. The ability to travel throughout a designated region within Iowa daily required.

Will work with students across multiple Iowa school districts within the Grant Wood AEA. Criminal and other relevant background checks also required.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  1. One of the following current licenses from the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners: 
    1. School Psychologist; or 
    2. School Counseling; or 
    3. Speech Language Pathologist.
  2. All of the following (a and b):
    1. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in orientation and mobility; and 
    2. Possession of a current Iowa Orientation and Mobility Specialist license. 
  3. All of the following (a and b):
    1. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in any field; and 
    2. Possession of a current Iowa Teaching Certificate.
