Job Description

Summary

This job involves hands-on work in coastal restoration projects, such as building oyster reefs, planting marsh grass, and managing volunteer events to protect South Carolina's shellfish habitats.

The role supports educational programs and ensures equipment and supplies are ready for field activities under federal grants.

Full Job Description

  • Promotes SCDNR and the Shellfish Management Section mission and messages by engaging the public in stewardship activities.
  • Employee will need to be self-sufficient in working to achieve desired outcomes required of position.
  • Duties will include helping to facilitate field logistics and implementation of the SCORE Programs community-based restoration activities related to multiple federal grants.

    Stewardship activities will include shell bagging, manufactured wire reef fabrication, oyster castle deployment, SHU reef deployment, reef building, marsh grass propagation and restoration.

  • Assist with the collection and processing of biological samples according to section protocols.
  • Work with senior staff to make sure that annual objectives and goals are met based on the funding source.
  • Assist with the implementation of the From Seeds to Shorelines program. Maintaining all greenhouses following processes established by senior staff.
  • Employee will be responsible for prep and breakdown of field gear necessary for oyster restoration projects, field days, and substrate fabrication days.

    Employee should be detail oriented and committed to maintaining and orderly working environment as there are multiple grants and projects being performed simultaneously.

  • Maintain field equipment, trailers, and research vessels in working condition. The employee will track supplies and work with section staff to procure items needed for volunteer event implementation.
  • Employee assists with a variety of other field projects related to shellfish management and restoration.

Requirements

A high school diploma and two (2) years of experience in wildlife, fisheries or agricultural work; or an associate degree in the technical sciences.

Qualifications

Knowledge of environmental principles, practices and procedures. Knowledge of standardized laboratory procedures. Experience working with the public, school classes or volunteers. Small boat handling and towing. Well organized, highly motivated individual willing to learn new skills. Ability to prepare and present clear and concise reports and keep accurate records. Ability to plan, schedule and direct the work of volunteers and subordinates. Ability communicate effectively with the public. Ability to use tractor and similar equipment. Excellent communication skills. Handy with small tools. Familiarity with SC inshore waters.
