Summary

This job involves hands-on work to manage and improve wildlife habitats in coastal areas, including tasks like planting crops, controlling water levels, maintaining trails and equipment, and helping with public hunting programs.

Key Requirements

  • Ability to obtain Prescribed Fire Manager Certification
  • Ability to obtain CDL (Commercial Driver's License)
  • Ability to obtain commercial pesticide applicator's license
  • Ability to obtain Coast Guard Captain's License
  • Knowledge of safe operation, maintenance, and repair of power tools, farm equipment, heavy equipment, and watercraft
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work well with team members and the public

Full Job Description

This employee will be responsible for assisting with habitat development work on the Upper Coastal Waterfowl Project.

Job Duties Include:

Assisting with wetland and upland habitat management activities including mowing fields and marshes, burning, discing, water level management and agricultural plantings.Assisting with construction, maintenance and installation of water control structures for Samworth, Santee Coastal and Santee Delta WMAs.

Performing maintenance of physical structures and grounds including mowing dikes, maintaining roads and trails and maintaining campground and signs. Performing minor repairs when needed.

Assisting with implementation of public use programs including hunts. Assisting with public hunt preparation. Providing assistance to WMA hunt participants.

Collecting necessary biological data as directed.Maintaining all Department issued equipment.

Maintaining familiarity with the three (3) properties of the Upper Coastal Waterfowl Project (Samworth, Santee Coastal Reserve and Santee Delta WMA's).

Preparing and maintains records and reports as required. Assisting with banding activities.

Requirements A high school diploma and two (2) years of experience in wildlife, fisheries or agricultural work; or an associate degree in the technical sciences.Ability to obtain and maintain a Prescribed Fire Manager Certification, CDL, commercial pesticide applicators license and a Coast Guard Captains License.

Qualifications Knowledgeable in the safe operation, maintenance and repair of small and large power tools, farm equipment, heavy equipment and watercraft.

Ability to get along and communicate with fellow employees and the general public. Ability to perform agricultural activities such as disking, mowing, planting and herbicide application.

Ability to assist with controlled burns. Ability to perform limited facilities maintenance and carpentry tasks.
